San Antonio Spurs (40-7)

There’s no end in sight for the San Antonio Spurs’ dominance. They’ve won 11 of 12 and still have a shot to match or best the 1996 Chicago Bulls’ 72-win effort. So why is no one talking about San Antonio?

Maybe it’s because they don’t have the marquee, go-to guy anymore, the Dwight Howard, the Kevin Durant, the LeBron James. The Spurs are the NBA’s fifth highest-scoring team yet don’t have a single player inside the top 25 individual scorers.

What does that tell you? The Spurs embody the team concept. Five different guys – Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Richard Jefferson and George Hill – average at least 11 points per game. Three more – Gary Neal, DeJuan Blair and Matt Bonner – average seven or more. Even vets like Antonio McDyess come off the bench to grab five boards per game. Everyone contributes in San Antonio.

Portland Trail Blazers (25-22)

The Blazers enjoyed a nice five-game winning streak from January 15 to 22 but it’s fair to wonder if a big slide is on the horizon. For one, tonight will mark Portland’s fifth straight home game and seventh in their last eight contests. Playing in your own building that often can backfire and make you complacent.

Worse yet for the Blazers, they can’t escape their injury woes forever. Greg Oden is gone for the year. Brandon Roy‘s troublesome knees will keep him out at least another month. Marcus Camby is out two more weeks, give or take. LaMarcus Aldridge has had to shoulder a huge load with so many high-impact players out of Portland’s lineup. He’s done an admirable job, averaging 21 points per game, but he’s finally starting to break down under the heavy burden.

A hip injury is starting to nag Aldridge and it shows in his recent play; he’s scored just nine and 17 points over his last two contests. Portland lost both of those games.

Trends:

Under is 10-2 in SA last 12 overall.
SA are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
SA are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Tue. games.
POR are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games.
POR are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Home team is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

The pick:

The Blazers seem ripe for the picking tonight, don’t they? They’re loaded with injuries, they’ve gone soft playing at home, they’ve lost two straight and they’re facing the NBA’s best team. The Spurs are also good to bettors – 28-17-2 against the spread and 13-61 ATS on the road this season. There simply aren’t many if any reasons to justify picking Portland tonight.
