Indiana Pacers (16-23 through Thursday, January 20)

It has to be nice playing near the bottom of the mediocre Eastern Conference. The Indiana Pacers are seven games under .500 and have lost five of seven yet they’re still very much alive in the playoff hunt, currently holding down the No. 8 seed.

Danny Granger continues to do his thing, averaging 21.5 points per game and shooting 39.1 per cent from three-point range, but the solid support he had from his teammates earlier this season is dissipating.

Darren Collison hasn’t lived up to the potential he showed in New Orleans last season – though he’s finally starting to heat up. The big problem has been Roy Hibbert. He looked like he was maturing into a premiere big man earlier this season but has absolutely tanked of late. In his last five games he’s scored eight, eight, nine, two and four points. Awful. But it isn’t entirely his fault; Hibbert is dealing with respiratory problems. He missed Wednesday’s game against Golden State and may not play over the weekend.

Denver Nuggets (24-17 through Thursday, January 20)

Despite the rampant Carmelo Anthony trade rumors the Denver Nuggets aren’t quitting. The NBA’s highest-scoring team continues to play with flair, dropping some huge scores of late and winning four of five. Melo himself has been inconsistent, likely distracted by constant media attention, but he righted the ship against Oklahoma City earlier this week with a 35-point effort.

Denver scores 107.2 points per game but it also allows 104.2 per contest; it has to score big every night as defense isn’t its strong suit.

The pick:

Feel confident picking Denver both straight-up and against the spread. Not only are the Pacers shorthanded because of Hibbert’s situation, Sunday will also be their fourth straight Western road game. These guys are beat up, slumping and probably exhausted. They have trouble scoring to begin with and they have the added concern of keeping the league’s top-scoring team off the board.

The Nuggets should cruise on Sunday night.

Betting Trends:

IND are 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 road games.
Under is 10-4 in IND last 14 overall.
DEN are 0-6-2 ATS in their last 8 Sun. games.
DEN are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. NBA Central.
IND are 4-9 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
