The New Orleans Hornets will look to make up some ground in the Southwest Division when they take on the red-hot Miami Heat, winners of eight straight games, tonight at the AmericanAirlines Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast locally on Sun Sports.

December has gotten off to a rough start for New Orleans with losses in four of the first six games it has played this month. The Hornets managed to knock off Detroit 94-74 last Wednesday night as a 10-point home favorite, but they lost to Oklahoma City 97-92 on Friday night as a three-point home favorite. Sunday afternoon, they fell behind by 22 points at halftime to Philadelphia on the road en route to an 88-70 loss as a one-point favorite. New Orleans shot just 14.3 percent from the field in the first half in one of its poorest offensive showings off the year.

The back-to-back losses dropped New Orleans to 14-9 straight-up and 11-11-1 against the spread for the season. The Hornets are now six games behind San Antonio in the Southwest Division and in sixth place in the Western Conference. David West leads the team in scoring with 18.6 points per game and Chris Paul is averaging 16.2 points and 10 assists per game. They are averaging 93.6 points per game as a team and giving up an average of 91.8 points per game.

The big three in Miami are finally starting to live up to all the hype, and have the Heat in the midst of an eight game winning streak which has moved them to the top of the Southeast Division. They are currently 17-8 SU and 12-13 ATS on the year and lead Orlando by half a game. While the level of competition over the past eight games has not been the best, Miami has won every game by double-digits including an 89-77 win over Atlanta a week ago as an 8 ½-point home favorite and a 111-98 victory over Utah this past Wednesday night as a one-point road underdog.

LeBron James leads the way for the Heat in scoring with an average of 24.2 points per game, but Dwyane Wade is right behind him with 23.1. Udonis Haslem is the Heat’s leading rebounder with 8.2 per game and James leads in assists with 7.2. Miami, as a team is averaging 101 points per game and shooting 47.7 percent from the floor. It is also holding its opponents to an average of 91.3 points per game.

NBA Gambling Trends:

New Orleans is 1-4 ATS in its last five games on the road and 2-6 ATS in its last eight games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of its last 10 games overall.
Miami is 1-2 ATS in its last three game home games, but 7-0 ATS in its last seven games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last five games overall.

Head-to-head, the Hornets have won six out of the last seven games SU including a 96-93 win in early November as a six-point road underdog. New Orleans is 9-0-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings and the total has gone ‘over’ in six of those games.

The recent trends in this series clearly favor New Orleans, but the Heat come into this game playing up to their potential, while the Hornets continue to struggle to find consistency on offense. Stick with Miami to run its current streak to nine with another double-digit win.

The Pick: Miami -11
