Homecourt is a sight for sore eyes for the Celtics, as Boston just wrapped up a three-game road trip and played seven of its last eight away from home. That trip included a three-game losing streak, though the Celtics have since rebounded to win three of four, including Sunday’s 114-107 win over the Raptors.

Rajon Rondo continues impressing as one of the league’s best young point guards. He burned Toronto for a triple double (22 points, 13 assists, 10 rebounds) and brought a lot of energy to the floor. More important, though, was a big game by Rasheed Wallace. Kevin Garnett has missed five straight games with a knee injury and his replacement, Wallace, had been underwhelming until Sunday. Against the Raptors, Sheed looked like the dominant player that drove the Pistons over the past few years, pouring in 29 points, eight boards, two blocks and hitting five threes.

After an impressive start to the season, the Hawks have hit the skids. A 7-1 start in December has been erased by a 4-7 run since, including Saturday’s 113-83 drubbing at the hands of Orlando. The loss was especially painful since Atlanta trails Orlando by just 1.5 games in the Southeast Division.

The Hawks have rode the NBA’s sixth-ranked offense this season, although it hasn’t been as effective lately; Atlanta is averaging 103.4 points per game this year but, over the past six games, its managed just 94.4 points per outing. That could be trouble against Boston, which owns the NBA’s second-highest-rated defense (93.5 PPG).

Head-to-head, Atlanta has held its own lately; the Hawks have won two straight over Boston (including a 93-85 win last Friday), both this season. That snapped a five-game regular season losing streak to the Celtics.

Trends:

The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Atlanta’s last 14 games when playing on the road against Boston
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Atlanta’s last 13 games on the road
Atlanta is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games when playing Boston
Atlanta is 2-5 SU in its last 7 games when playing Boston
Boston is 9-1 SU in its last 10 games when playing at home against Atlanta
Boston is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games at home
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Boston’s last 5 games
Boston is 17-5 SU in its last 22 games

THE PICK

Atlanta seems to have Boston’s number this year, but the Hawks are playing uneven basketball right now. Their offense is lagging and, even though defensive presence Kevin Garnett won’t be in the lineup, the Celtics should contribute even more problems.

Bet on Boston to get the win in front of a feisty home crowd.

Atlanta home to Washington, Wednesday, January 13
Boston at New Jersey, Wednesday, January 13

The Hawks are coming off a disappointing loss to Orlando as with a win they would have taken a 1/2 game lead in the Southeast. Boston has had their share of injury problems with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett both missing significant olaying time. With Boston playing at home they should be able to win this game by more than four points, but this game will be closer than you think.
