Seems like we’ve slept all year on the Dallas Mavericks, who were buried before the season as too old and again in mid-season when Dirk Nowitzki went out for a few weeks with an injury. But while attention is focused on the problems of the presumed finalists, Miami and the Lakers, and others have marveled at the Spurs’ consistency, the Mavs have been able to operate under the radar.

The Mavericks have written an interesting story of their own in North Texas, and 8 wins in the last 9 games (what’s up with last night’s loss to home to Memphis, anyway?) have allowed them to claim the second-best record in a Western Conference where the talent is deep and home-court edge will be important come playoff time next month. Unlike last season, when a major trade revamped the rotation, the cast of characters has been relatively stable and helped Dallas stay productive despite injuiries. Nowitzki is back, producing at the same rate as in previous season, and Caron Butler is still hoping to get back on the court after suffering a serious knee injury on Jan. 1. Other than that, it’s Jason Terry and Jason Kidd, Mark Cuban screaming at the refs and coach Rick Carlisle tight-lipped on the bench. Stop me if this sounds familiar. One new look: Tyson Chandler has earned the starting center job, banishing Brendan Haywood to the bench.

There is one new face, though. The Mavs picked up Corey Brewer last week with an eye toward giving them better perimeter defense, which would come in handy against a spread-the-court offense team like the Spurs.

 NBA Trends:

Over is 9-2 in DAL last 11 overall.
Over is 8-2 in DAL last 10 road games.
DAL are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Northwest.
Under is 9-1 in MIN last 10 home games.
MIN are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 home games.
MIN are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
Road team is 23-7 ATS in the last 30 meetings.
Under is 16-7 in the last 23 meetings.

Best bets: Mavericks backers this season have been able to make a tidy profit – Dallas is 34-25-2 against the number, and have covered 7 of the last 9. Bettors should not be afraid of the Mavs playing the second straight night; they’ve been a solid ATS team on the back end of back-to-backs this season, and they aren’t going down twice in a row.

It’s been a decade since Minnesota last played a meaningful game after Groundhog Day.

Liking the Mavs minus the points, with a parlay play on the over.
