Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs Preview

The Spurs (22-3) are the hottest team in the Western Conference winners of 7 straight and they will facing a Grizzlies (12-15) squad Saturday night that is coming off a bad loss and is only 5-5 in their last 5 games. NBA lines have the Spurs as 9.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 199.5.

In their last games the Grizzlies struggled on offense losing to the Houston Rockets 103-87 Friday night while the Spurs won a 113-112 barnburner against the Denver Nuggets in the Mile High City on Thursday night.

The Spurs have the best home record in the Western Conference (13-2) and have won 7 straight at home while the Grizzlies are only 4-10 on the road.

The Grizzlies are big 9.5-point betting underdogs in this game and it may have been more if the oddsmakers knew the status of Memphis leading scorer Rudy Gay, who may be suspended for his flagrant foul he committed in last night’s loss to Houston. Gay is averaging 21 ppg and if he does not play it will be a major blow for the Grizzlies.

This season the Spurs are 15-11-1 ATS and while the Griz are 3 games under .500 they have been a solid betting team going 16-8-1 ATS. Something’s gotta give in this game, as the Spurs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and the Grizzlies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games. NBA Betting

Memphis must play better than they did last night in Houston where they only scored 33 points in the first half and for the game only shot 36.5% from the floor. Gay was the only starter that shot over 50% from the field and Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph only combined for 6/29 shooting.

While the Grizzlies struggled in this last game the Spurs did not scoring 113 points on Denver and shooting over 51% from the field. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker combined for 52 points and if they have a big game again Memphis will be in trouble. Randolph and Scola have to play good D on Duncan and also keep him off the boards.

The Grizzlies do have an athletic backcourt with Gay, Mike Conley (17 ppg), and O.J. Mayo (12.1 ppg) and they have to stay in front of Parker and not let him penetrate and dish out. They also cannot allow Manu Ginobili (20 ppg) get into the lane and bomb away from deep.

The Spurs are a higher scoring team ranking 4th in the league in points per game and Memphis cannot get in a high scoring game, especially if Gay does not play. To pull off the upset they will have to play good D and shoot the rock better than they did last night.

San Antonio has stepped up their defense in their 7-game winning streak holding opponents to 93 ppg on 43.6% shooting in that span.

Even with Gay in the lineup I do not think it would make much difference, as the Grizzlies do not match up well with the Spurs. They have great ball movement ranking 2nd in the league in assists and they have 5 players that are averaging in double figures. Duncan will have a big game against the weak frontcourt defense of the Grizzlies and the Spurs will have no problem winning this game and covering the 9.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Memphis is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a road underdog of 5.0-10.5 and 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games as an underdog.
San Antonio is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite of 5.0-10.5 and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

I would tend to go with the Over pick in this game and even though the last 5 games between these 2 teams have gone Over the Grizzlies may struggle to score tonight, especially with Gay possibly out so I would stay away from the Over/Under in this game.

Pick: Spurs -9.5
