The San Antonio Spurs will look to extend their winning streak to eight when the host a New York Knicks team that will be trying to avoid its fifth straight loss.

New York beat the Spurs by 13 points at Madison Square Garden earlier this month and San Antonio will look to return the favor as they attempt to extend their 8.5 games lead over Dallas in the Southwest and six games up on the L.A. Lakers in the NBA’s Western Conference standings.

The Spurs should have some momentum after wiping out an 11-point halftime deficit in the third quarter en route to a 104-95 win over Toronto on Wednesday. DeJuan Blair, who has really stepped it up this season, notched 22 points and 11 rebounds while Manu Ginobili had 23 points, seven assists and four boards in the win.

Ginobili has averaged 20.0 points during San Antonio’s latest streak, while at least five players have scored 13 points or more in every game during that span. Blair has done it in two of the last three contests. The second-year center had 18 points and 13 rebounds in a 101-89 win over Dallas last Friday before his standout performance against the Raptors.

The New York Knicks meanwhile, sputtered, and Amare Stoudemire and company have lost four straight games, all of which were against Western Conference opponents.

They are coming off a 104-89 loss to the Rockets on Wednesday despite  a game-high 25 points from Stoudemire, all while seeing their record drop to 22-19 overall. New York has allowed 114.3 points per game during its losing streak.

And it won’t get any easier with the Spurs ready and waiting.

San Antonio has done well at home against New York in recent years. They’ve held the Knicks to 85.7 points per game in winning the last seven meetings at the AT&T Center.

The Knicks will need to defend the 3-point line on Friday, a place where the Spurs have done well and have won 24 of 25 when they make at least 37.5 percent of their long-range attempts, a percentage four of New York’s last six opponents have exceeded.

As long as the Spurs’ Blair, Ginobili and Tony Parker healthy and effective, they should have no problem picking up wins on their way to a postseason run.

New York averaging 107.1 PPG and San Antonio putting up 104.7 per game, so an OVER play wouldn’t be out of the question in this one, especially since the two teams totaled  243 points in their first matchup the season.

The Knicks will need to do a good job of boxing out Blair and containing Parker, while hoping to get Raymond Felton back on the rails to help out Stoudemire who at this point is carrying he team on his shoulders.
