When the Los Angeles Lakers take on the San Antonio Spurs this Sunday deep in the heart of Texas, they will try to improve upon their disappointing mark against the league’s elite.

The Lakers have played nine games against Boston, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, San Antonio, and Dallas. Their combined record this season in those games is just 2-7. They lost both games to the Spurs, and the Lakers are 22-11 away from Staples Center. Playing .667 ball on the road would be wonderful for most teams, but it is cause for concern among Lakers fans.

In the first meeting, San Antonio won at home by 15 points, and the difference was the turnover differential, in which the Lakers coughed it up 16  times compared to just nine for the Spurs. DeJuan Blair also poured in 17 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. In the second meeting, the Spurs edged the Lakers by one point as Antonio McDyess tipped home the winning shot at the buzzer.

The major cause for concern in San Antonio is the loss of Tony Parker. The Spurs point guard was playing well this season, averaging 17.1 points and 6.6 assists per contest. But Parker is out for 2-4 weeks with a strained muscle in his calf, and they will need others to pick up the slack in his absence. George Hill is taking his spot in the starting lineup.

With the Lakers, it’s all about Kobe Bryant. The shooting guard is averaging 25.1 points per contest, shooting 46% from the floor. Pau Gasol is second on the team at 18.1 points per game. Gasol is also grabbing 10.5 rebounds per game, fifth best in the NBA.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Spurs – The Lakers have struggled against the elite teams in the league this season, something that in championship seasons past has been unthinkable. The Spurs should be able to overcome the absence of Parker and continue their winning ways at home. The Spurs are a league-best 28-2 at home this season.
