Two division leaders in the Western Conference renew acquaintances with an eye on the post-season as the Oklahoma City Thunder entertain the defending world champion Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers are comfortably in front in the Pacific Division. Yet they are coming off a stretch where they lost three straight games away from Staples Center before the All-Star weekend. The Thunder are the top dogs for the moment in the Northwest Division, and know that a victory could signal that they are real contenders in the West.

Los Angeles won the first meeting of the season 101-94 back in mid-January at home. Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol each scored 21 points in victory for the Lakers, while Andrew Bynum grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his 10 points. Russell Westbrook’s game-high 32 points paced Oklahoma City and Kevin Durant added 24. The Thunder shot just 2-for-22 from three-point range in the defeat. Durant leads the league in scoring, averaging 28.8 PPG.

The Thunder will have a different lineup this time, thanks to two deals they made at the NBA Trade Deadline on Thursday. They acquired Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson from Boston in one deal and Nazr Mohammad from Charlotte in another. These moves hope to make the Thunder tougher under the basket and provide veteran leadership. None of the three players were available on Friday, which might explain why the short-handed Thunder lost by 23 in Orlando.

The Lakers were rumored to be one of the teams involved in the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes. Yet the trade deadline came and went without Los Angeles pulling the trigger on a single deal. The club is still without the services of reserve forward Matt Barnes due to knee surgery.

Recent Trends:
Under is 36-13-2 in LAL last 51 Sun. games.
LAL are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
OKC are 5-22 ATS in their last 27 Sun. games.
Over is 23-9 in OKC last 32 home games.
Over is 13-6-1 in OKC last 20 Sun. games.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Lakers – The Thunder are going to improve with the additions made at the deadline, but Sunday will likely be their first game in uniform. It will take them a couple of games to find the right balance of minutes, and against the well-oiled Lakers machine that will not be a formula for success.
