With all buzz surrounding Carmelo Anthony, one has to wonder how it will affect the Nuggets when they roll into San Antonio on Sunday night to tip off against the NBA’s best San Antonio Spurs.

Since leading Syracuse to a national championship in his one season on campus, Anthony has been the foundation of a Nuggets franchise that has advanced to the postseason seven straight years after missing the playoffs in the eight seasons prior to his arrival.

The three-time All-Star forward and the Nuggets having been playing its best basketball of the season despite the swirling trade rumors that Anthony could end up in New York, including a whopping of the Lebron James-less Heat, 130-102 on Thursday night just two days after hammering Phoenix 132-98 on Tuesday in a game where Anthony posted a game-high10 rebounds.

This could be a last stand of sorts for the Anthony-led Nuggets who are one of the best offensive teams in the NBA, ranking second in scoring (106.9 PPG), fourth in offensive efficiency (108.6), and fifth in three-point shooting (38.3%), and Carmelo is leading the way.

Anthony is 24th league-wide with a 20.70 PER and is averaging 23.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

Denver shoots the three well too. That could bode well as the Spurs –still a top-10 team defensively overall — is only 28th in the NBA in three-point field goal percentage defense (39.2%).

San Antonio has upped the tempo this season, as Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker have taken over the reins on offense. Ginobili posted a game-high 22 points the last time the two teams met, helping the Spurs scorch the Nuggets’ defense by shooting  52.6 percent (40 of 76), including 50 percent from beyond the arc (14 of 28) in a 109-103 victory back on Dec. 22. It was the second win this campaign, as the Spurs edged out the Nuggies, 113-112 just six days before despite an amazing 31-point performance by Anthony.

If Carmelo remains in Mile High, the Nuggets could be poised to make a modest run in the standings, but still would need some additional work defensively to make a deep postseason run,  as Denver is an average team at best on the defensive end, ranking 19th in defensive efficiency (105.7) and in rebound rate (49.7).

Playing without injured leading shot blocker Chris Andersen doesn’t help, but there’s no excuse for a team sporting Nene (20.6 PER, 28th in the NBA), Kenyon Martin, Andersen, and Anthony to be this weak defensively and on the glass.

The Nuggets have managed to win some big games, but don’t bet on it happening again against the league’s most efficient (109.6) offense.
