With the Chicago Bulls having clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference, the battle for the second seed and home court in a potential second round matchup is at stake when the Boston Celtics visit the Miami Heat on Sunday in south Florida.

Both clubs enter play on Friday with identical 54-24 records. The Celtics will play the Wizards on Friday while the Heat will take on the Bobcats. Therefore, both teams will need to weary of looking ahead to Sunday’s showdown. Certainly, the game on Sunday is important to both teams equally, but perhaps it means slightly more to the Heat from a psychological standpoint. Boston has won all three games straight up versus Miami this season, and in fact they have won eight consecutive contests against Miami.

When it comes to the Heat, it’s hard to talk about anyone but the ‘Big Three’ of Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James. When they combine to score over 75 points in a game, the Heat have a gaudy record of 26-3 in those contests. Entering play on Friday night, James has scored 25 or more points in seven straight games, two shy of the franchise record.

But the bench is starting to figure out their role as well. In Wednesday’s victory over Milwaukee, Mike Miller grabbed 12 rebounds and Joel Anthony added 11. It marked the first time that had happened by two players off the Heat bench since Matt Geiger and Rony Seikaly in 1994.

For the Celtics, Kevin Garnett moved past Adrian Dantley recently into 20th place all-time in scoring in NBA history. Ray Allen is knocking down three-pointers at 45.3% this season, which would break the Celtics team mark held by Eddie House back in 2008-09.

Allen is averaging 49.4% from the floor overall this season, while teammate Paul Pierce is at 49.7% efficiency. If they both finish over 50% while maintaining three-point percentages over 40% and free throw percentages over 80%, they would be the first teammates to do so in the NBA since Jeff Hornacek and John Stockton did so for Utah in both the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.

Recent Trends:
Under is 14-3 in BOS last 17 overall.
Under is 9-2 in BOS last 11 road games.
BOS are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 Sun. games.
MIA are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 vs. NBA Atlantic.
BOS are 16-5 ATS in the last 21 meetings in Miami.
BOS are 25-10 ATS in the last 35 meetings.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Heat – Miami has shown improvement against the Celtics in the last game over the first two meetings in two key areas: points in the paint and second chance points. After being dominated by the C’s in these two stats, Miami was even in the last game. They should benefit from that in this game.
