Lakers guard Kobe Bryant needs just 13 points to pass Hakeem Olajuwon for 8th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, and it could happen Saturday afternoon at the Staples Centers against the cooling Boston Celtics.

Boston will be playing their third game in four days, all on the road, and its first against their rivals from the left coast. This will be the first time the two have met since last year’s NBA Champions downed the Celts 83-79 in Game 7, dousing their hopes for a title.

The Celtics will return center Shaquille O’Neal to the starting lineup for the first time since injuring his right hip on Jan. 21 against Utah, and I am sure he will be happy to face his old pals in this one.

Boston is coming off an 88-71 loss at Phoenix on Friday. The Suns overpowered the Celts early  while building an 18-point lead, and didn’t back down late when Kevin Garnett was involved in a pair of altercations and was tossed in the fourth after getting into it with Channing Frye. Garnett had 18 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Boston,  the NBA’s top-shooting team never found a rhythm offensively, scoring just 16 points in the first quarter, hitting 34 percent overall and making just two of its 18 3-point attempts on their way to a season-low in points. And it wasn’t any better defensively either.

Meanwhile, the Lakers appeared lackadaisical, falling behind by 20 points in the third quarter before falling to Sacramento 100-95 in front of a booing home crowd, as the Kings improved to 4-15 on the road. Kobe Bryant scored 38 points, but it wasn’t enough.

Shannon Brown contributed 17 points, but Pau Gasol was a bust with a disappointing nine points on 4-of-11 shooting, while Lamar Odom had just four points while missing all seven of his field goal attempts. Los Angeles has won 10 of 13, but just three of its last six heading into Sunday’s contest.

Are they looking ahead too much to their out with Boston?

Maybe, and why not. The rivalry between the Celtics and the Lakers goes back to the days of the Larry Byrd and Magic Johnson mactchups in the 1990s, and then after fading was reborn again in the last year’s NBA Finals.  There’s a lot more at stake than a W in the win column in this match up.

Los Angeles leads the regular season series 7-4 in the last 11 meetings.

This will definitely be the game to watch this week and should play out like an old west melodrama. I mean just the fact that Shaq is back in LA is enough drama alone.

The Lakers sport the league’s most efficient offense (109.5 points per 100 possessions), but Boston are second in the NBA in defensive efficiency (97.9), and they’re only going to get better in that area with Kendrick Perkins back in the mix.

What separates Los Angeles from Beantown is the same thing that lifted the Lakers to that dramatic win in Game 7 of the 2010 Finals–rebounding.
