L.A. Lakers vs. New Orleans Hornets Preview

The Hornets shot better than they did in Game 2, but they could not hold off a 4th quarter spurt by the Lakers to lose by 14 points in Game 3. L.A. took back home court advantage with the win and Pau Gasol finally showed up in the series going for 17 points and grabbing 10 boards. NBA lines have the Lakers as 5.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 182.5.

In Game 3 the Lakers won 100-86 and for the first time in the series they covered the spread. The posted total for the game went Over.

This season the Lakers are 40-44-1 ATS and the Hornets are 41-42-2 ATS. The Lakers have covered the spread in 5 of their last 6 games against the Hornets in New Orleans.

Chris Paul had a good game going for 22 points on 9/13 shooting, but the Lakers played solid D and denied him the ball for long stretches and he has to have the rock to score and dish out. He stated after the game, “I can’t let them do that. I’ve got to get my shots. I’ve got to be more aggressive and not allow them to take me out.”

The Lakers played a balanced game on offense in Game 3 with Kobe Bryant going for 30, Gasol going for 17 and Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom combing to score 27 points. For the 2nd straight game they used their size to score easy buckets inside and they won the battle of the boards. The Lakers had 14 offensive rebounds and that led to 17 2nd chance points. The Hornets have to play better interior defense in Game 4 or they will be down 3-1 in this series. NBA Betting

A couple of other big keys for the Hornets winning Game 4 are better 3-pt shooting and improved bench play. In Game 3 New Orleans only hit 2 of their 13 3-pointers and their bench really struggled showing 4/17 from the floor. These things are important, as the Hornets shot well from the field, Carl Landry, Trevor Ariza, and Emeka Okafor combined to score 50 points and Paul was 9/13 from the floor and the Hornets still lost by 14.

The Hornets have to figure out how to guard the Lakers in the paint and that is a tall order, no pun intended, and I don’t see that happening. Gasol woke up in Game 3 and he will play well again and the big guys of the Lakers are just too much for the Hornets to handle, as L.A. will win this game and cover the spread.

Betting Trends

L.A. is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 road games, 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a favorite, and has an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 games.
New Orleans is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog and has an Over record of 5-2 in their last 7 games.

Pick: Lakers -5.5
