L.A. Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets Preview

Tonight the Denver Nuggets (24-17), who have been dealing with Carmelo Anthony and the constant trade talk, but are still winning, host the defending champion L.A. Lakers (31-13). NBA lines have the visiting Lakers as slight 1-point favorites with a total of 212.5.

In their last games both teams played on Wednesday night, but with different results with the Lakers losing to the Dallas Mavericks 109-100 while the Nuggets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 112-107.

The Nuggets are 6-4 in their last 10 games and are 19-4 at home and the Lakers are 8-2 in their last 10 games and 14-8 on the road.

Neither team has been a good one to bet some coin on this season, as the Lakers are 19-24-1 ATS and the Nuggets are 16-22-3 ATS. The Nuggets have covered the spread against the Lakers in 4 of their last 5 home games.

The Lakers have lost 4 straight in Denver and the reason is they have been horrid shooting the rock. In their last 4 games in the Mile High City the Lakers have shot 35.5% from the floor with Kobe Bryant (25.1 ppg) shooting 35% and Lamar Odom (15.5 ppg) shooting 29.3% in that span. They will have to shoot the ball well tonight against a Denver squad that is averaging 125.3 ppg in their last 4 home games.

Is Melo (23.5 ppg) staying or going? The Nets have recently come out and said they are not pursuing the superstar any longer and after slumping for a couple of games he had 35 points in the Nuggets’ last game. However, he has been booed at home recently and he has to block that out and have another good scoring game tonight. NBA Betting

It is important that Kobe gets some help in the scoring department from Odom, Pau Gasol (18.6 ppg) and the other Lakers, as L.A. is only a .500 club this season when Bryant takes over 21 shots and 23-5 when he shoots less than 21 times.

The Lakers shot well in their loss to the Mavs, but it was their defense that killed them allowing Dallas to shoot 55% from the field and 46.2% from beyond the 3-point arc. If they play D like that tonight they will have to light up the scoreboard on offense in order to win.

Kobe Bryant pinpointed the Lakers’ defensive woes after the Dallas game stating, “We were making mistakes all night on defense, because offensively things were going well for us. We were playing well offensively and got a lead, but we were making mistakes defensively.”

The Lakers do have a legit defense ranking 11th in the league and they will have to play good D tonight against a high scoring Nuggets squad that has 7 players that are averaging in double figures. Chauncey Billups and super 6th man J.R. Smith have to shoot the rock well from the outside so the Lakers do not pack the lane.

A key to Denver winning tonight is how they play on the boards. They only rank 16th in the league in rebounds per game while the Lakers rank 2nd. The Nuggets will also be a little shorthanded tonight since C Chris Anderson (6.1 rpg) is out with a knee injury. Melo (8.1 rpg) and Nene Hilario (7.4 rpg) have to play well on the boards tonight and not allow Gasol (10.6 rpg), Odom (9.5 rpg), and Andrew Bynum (7.4 rpg) to dominate the glass.

The Nuggets are a great home team and have had the Lakers number in the last couple of years, but that will change tonight. Phil Jackson will make sure the Lakers play good D tonight and that will be the difference and they will win this game.

Betting Trends

L.A. is 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite and Denver is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
In the last 11 games between these 2 teams in Denver the total has gone Under 8 times.

Pick: Lakers -1
