Team records:
Boston: 50-32 SU, 33-48-1 ATS
Cleveland: 61-21 SU, 37-43-2 ATS

This is uncharted territory for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are 48 minutes from one of the biggest letdowns in NBA history.

Since their loss to the Magic in the playoffs last season it has been assumed that the Cavs would take on the Lakers for the NBA title this season.

Matchup: CAVALIERS vs. CELTICS

Time: Thursday 8:00 ET
Venue: TD Garden, Boston
Spread: Celtics -1
Over/Under: 196

Instead, LeBron James is getting torn apart in Cleveland as a quitter and his supporting cast – assembled piece by piece in an effort to pacify James and induce him into remaining once his contract runs out – is criticized as overrated.

James is hurt. Or lackadaisical. Or angry about something. Or unable to carry a team on his back like Michael Jordan could.

Or too predictable.

Or too much a self-centered prima donna. Was the fact that he took only four shots at home in the Game 5 blowout loss evidence of any or all of the above? No one seems to know.

One thing, though, is certain. If James and the Cavs are not the same team that posted the best record in the league during the regular season, neither are the Celtics the same team that was so bafflingly inconsistent from November through the middle of April.

Boston has appeared to have marshaled its resources and made life excruciating for James, pinching him with two defenders at the foul line and forcing James to dish.

If the strategy holds for four more periods, it will have a profound effect on the two coaches. Mike Brown, a defensive guy who seems unwilling to change the offense in even the slightest and refuses to pull the painfully ineffective Shaquille O’Neal for the more-mobile Zdrunas Ilgauskas, will be looking for work.

He can’t survive a second consecutive season without at least getting to the Finals. And Boston assistant/defensive guru Tom Thibodeau will certainly wind up with a head coaching job, perhaps in Boston if Doc Rivers calls it quits.

Lots on the plate here, especially for a Cavalier team which now must face the fact that James has to have a triple-double-type game for Cleveland to have a chance against a Boston starting five (Garnett, Rondo, Perkins, Pierce and Ray Allen) that has never lost a playoff series.

Home court in this series is meaningless as visitors have a 3-2 record. More significant than the line (Boston -1) is the fact that the total (196) is the highest of the series (and by 2.5 points).

Cleveland’s inability to deal with PG Rajon Rondo has helped the number drift higher, and you have to wonder what the Cavs will try tonight.

Parker can’t get the job done, Williams appears helpless, and James guarding Rondo pits Pierce against a smaller Cav.

Still liking the UNDER here as Cleveland walks the ball up and gives to James to create on 85-90 percent of its possessions.
