Kevin Durant and company were looking for a little payback in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, and they got it, tying the series at one game apiece just in time to head home for Game three on Saturday night.

The Thunder survived an early Dallas scoring spree, narrowed the deficit by the half, and then built a healthy lead in the fourth quarter en route to a 106-100 victory over the Mavericks on Thursday night.

And with all with All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook, who spent the final frame on the bench.

Westbrook, who was having another tough outing — 7 of 15 shots in Game 2, up from 3 of 15 in Game 1 — was pulled by Coach Scott Brooks who stuck in back up Eric Maynor.

That left Oklahoma City with just one starter–Durant–and reserves Maynor, James Harden, Nick Collison and Daequan Cook to carry out the task of sealing what was probably the most important victory in Thunder history.

Durant once again led the team with 24 points, down from the 40 he scored in the series opener, while Harden showed his ability as a closer, netting 10 of his 23 points in the final quarter on 4 of 5 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers. Maynor finished with 13 points, Cook eight and Collison six.

Oklahoma City made 55.7 percent of their shots, matching the second best anyone has done against the Mavericks all season, while winning the battle of the backups 50-29. They also fractured a Dallas defense that came into this series not having allowed more than 97 points in any playoff game, for the second time in a row.

Meanwhile, the Thunder D found a way to slowdown towering forward Dirk Notwitzki, who went from scoring 48 in the opener to having only 13 points through three quarters in Game 2. He was held scoreless in the third period, but did drain 16 in the fourth quarter to finish with 29.

Dallas won Game 1 by simply outscoring Oklahoma City, not by playing any better defense. So if they can’t outscore them, what do they need to do?

It’s simple. Being a veteran team, the Mavs need to play smarter. Take better care of the ball, and in turn, manufacture more points with the turnovers they recover. Oklahoma City has been more opportunistic over the two games, snatching 32 points off 23 loose balls, while Mavs have just 13 points on 17 loose balls.

If Dallas wants to beat the youth and agility of the Thunder, they will need to rely on their experience. It worked in Game 1 and in two of the three regular-season meetings.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Oklahoma –
I am afraid the Mavs road to the Western Conference Finals after their six game bout with Portland, may have been too easy, as they beat the Lakers in four straight. And even though they are riding a three-game road winning streak, I believe the atmosphere at Oklahoma City Arena will prove to be too much, as a battle tested Thunder snatch Game 3 on Saturday night.
