A few years back there was some doubt as to whether Joakim Noah would be a player in the NBA. His skills were questionable, and there was the matter of that funny shot.
No one is laughing now, least of all the Miami Heat. Not after Noah dominated the boards in Game 1 and basically told the Heat that unless their bigs step up their game more, plenty of Bulls misses are going to result in offensive rebounds and putbacks. There’s nothing more demoralizing for a team that to play tough defense, force a bad shot and then see the rebound put back in.
Noah had 14 rebounds in Game One – 8 of them offensive. His edge over Miami’s Joel Anthony (0 points, 6 rebounds in 31 minutes) comprised just about the Bulls’ entire 45-33 advantage over a Miami team which is in danger of going into a 2-0 pit when the dust settles on tonight’s Game 2 in Chicago.
What to do if you’re the Heat? Zdrunas Ilgauskas isn’t the answer. The only option available to Erik Spoelstra at this point is an all hands on deck approach. Forget about running on misses. Five guys hit the defensive boards and try to protect their overmatched bigs and mitigate at least a little Chicago’s huge advantage. Might work, might not. But are there any other options besides figuring out a way to shoot 55 percent from the floor against one of the league’s best defenses?
These are not the overmatched 76ers, and not even the calcified Celtics. The Bulls are in your face for 48, and the Heat need to step up their game. Tonight.
