If the first game of the 2011 NBA Western Conference Quarterfinal series on Sunday between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Denver Nuggets is any indication of how the entire series will play out, then fasten your seat belts for an exhilarating ride.

The Thunder look to build on their 107-103 triumph from Game 1 with more of the same offensively. In the first seven minutes, they were outscored 23-10. Yet, through the rest of the game, Oklahoma City outscored the Nuggets 97-80.

Oklahoma City will try for more balanced scoring. Kevin Durant poured in a game-high 41 points, while Russell Westbrook added 31 points. It marked the fifth time this season the duo each scored over thirty in the same game.

Denver had five players in double figures, led by Nene and his 22 points. Outsiders think the Nuggets should pay more defensive attention to Durant and Westbrook. But a closer look at their offensive numbers shows why coach George Karl was placing more importance on Denver’s execution offensively.

The Nuggets shot just 4-for-16 from three-point range in Game 1. Denver grabbed five offensive rebounds in the game, missing plenty of opportunities when Kendrick Perkins was on the bench. And while the Nuggets had balanced scoring, they were top-heavy percentage-wise. If you remove both Nene (9-for-11 from the field) and Danio Galinari (6-for-11 from the floor), the rest of Denver’s squad shot 43.6% for the game.

This is where Denver needs to see more consistent scoring from players such as Kenyon Martin, Wilson Chandler, and Ty Lawson.

While the Thunder were not significantly better on the boards, as many expected with the trade deadline acquisitions of Kendrick Perkins and Nazr Mohammad, Oklahoma City should see an advantage in this area as the series moves along.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Thunder – James Hardin shot just 1-for-5, including a 0-for-4 night from beyond the arc. He should produce much better numbers on Wednesday, meaning Durant and Westbrook will have to do less.
