This is what Pat Riley had in mind all along. An offense difficult to guard in half-court sets and impossible to guard in the open court. A defense that clogs passing lanes and produces turnovers that lead to early baskets. No one is talking anymore about how the Heat can lose to the likes of the Pacers, Knicks and Clippers. It’s playoff time and the Heat have turned into the beast that we expected last November.

They aren’t a team, at least as we’ve defined teams in the past. The Heat consist of two of the most athletic players the league has ever seen, a decent 6-foot-11 power forward who owes his existence to them, and not a lot else. They run few, if any, plays. Their half-court offense consists of Dwyane Wade or LeBron James creating space for open jumpers or slashes to the rim.

More three decades ago then-new NBA commissioner David Stern changed the NBA from a team game to an individual-based entity, knowing that stars would sell on TV.

Super teams with superstars have held sway since, and the best players have taken full advantage of that system and now are calling the shots and telling the league where they’ll play. Maybe not exactly what Stern had in mind, but he’ll live with it for the sake of TV ratings and heavy wallets.

So the Heat head into these Eastern Conference finals on the highest of highs after getting rid of their old nags, the Boston Celtics. Derrick Rose will feel pressure from everywhere as the Heat try to force the Bulls out of their game and grab control of the series right off the bat. Someone – perhaps Carlos Boozer or Joakim Noah – will have to be active in the paint and exploit the Heat in the only place that they appear vulnerable.

NBA Trends:

Under is 9-0 in MIA last 9 Conference Finals games.
MIA are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games.
Under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
Home team is 5-2-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

BEST BET: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau is the best in the business at designing ways to stop teams that are dependent on a single player to run the offense. His Celtics beat James (Cleveland) and Wade (Miami) in back-to-back series last year. We’ll see how he does against James and Wade together.

Miami +2 in the opener is the play. Heat have too much momentum.
