San Antonio came up empty in its first game without the injured Tim Duncan, who figures to not put on a Spurs uniform for another week and a half or so while his injured ankle mends, but the Spurs’ incredible season has given them enough of a buffer so they don’t have to worry all that much about losing home court edge throughout the playoffs. At 57-14 and 11 to go, the roof would have to cave in completely for the Spurs to even have to sweat.
But there are a few obstacles to deal with, starting with two more road games this weekend – tonight at Portland and Sunday at Memphis. Neither should be easy because both the Blazers and Grizzlies have to hustle just to get to the playoffs. And even with Duncan, the Spurs have been no lock against either. SA lost at Portland earlier this season, 99-86, and the Spurs (albeit minus Tony Parker) were drilled by Grizzlies in Memphis, 109-93. And playing three games in five days on the road is never the best avenue, especially for an old team like San Antonio.
Gregg Popovich will deny it up and down and probably spit in your good eye for even mentioning it, but the rest of the season will be spent getting things in order for the playoffs – getting Duncan back into the lineup, keeping legs fresh and figuring out if he wants to use an 8- or 9-player rotation in the post-season.
NBA Trends:
SA are 15-6 ATS in their last 21 vs. NBA Northwest.
Over is 11-5 in SA last 16 overall.
Under is 15-7-1 in SA last 23 vs. NBA Northwest.
Home team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
BEST BET: Late in the season it’s all about motivation, and the Trail Blazers have plenty of reason to play hard. Portland is in the mix for a playoff spot and could finish as high as 5th in the Western Conference, or not even make it into the post-season (though that’s unlikely).
They have four wins in the last five games and on Sunday start a nasty three-game (Oklahoma City, San Antonio, New Orleans) road swing that could determine whether they will be playing beyond mid-April. Tonight’s game is a must-win.
Take the Blazers and lay the point.
