2010 NBA Playoffs- Western Conference Preview & Predictions

After 82 games of the regular season, eight teams from each conference have qualified for the start of the real season, the 2010 NBA playoffs. For a team to make it to the finals they will have to win three grueling rounds within their own conference. Here is a preview for each match-up in the first round of the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference along with the current series prices.

#1 Los Angeles Lakers (-800) vs. #8 Oklahoma City Thunder (+500)

Much has been made about how the Lakers finished the regular season, losing six out of their last 10 games but they are still the defending champions, the best team in the West, and most importantly entering the time of year when they tend to shine. Kobe Bryant has had some time to rest and should be ready to go as the Lakers get ready for another deep run.

Oklahoma City, led by Kevin Durant is making their first appearance in the postseason. If they can take advantage of a slow start by the Lakers they could make things interesting.

The Lakers will still be a bit rusty to start the postseason so it will take them six games to advance.

#2 Dallas Mavericks (-160) vs. #7 San Antonio Spurs (+140)

With players like Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Brendon Haywood; Dallas is capable of beating anyone when they play up to their ability. While they may not need to be at their best in this first series to win, they will have to elevate their game as the postseason wears on.

San Antonio will need a complete effort from Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili to hang with their in-state rivals over a seven game series.

The Spurs should throw a scare into Dallas by winning one on the road, but the Mavericks persevere in six games.

#3 Phoenix Suns (NL) vs. # 6 Portland Trail Blazers (NL)

The Suns enter the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the West having gone 23-6 since the All-Star break with Amar’e Stoudemire playing at a very high level. With Steve Nash, Jason Richardson, and Grant Hill this team has a wealth a talent that is capable of carrying them deep into the playoffs.

Portland was dealt a blow when Brandon Roy injured his knee at the end of the season as his status for this series is uncertain at this time. They will rely on Andre Miller and Marcus Camby to pick up the slack but it may not be enough.

The Suns have too much talent for this series to go longer than five games.

#4 Denver Nuggets (-175) vs. #5 Utah Jazz (+155)

At mid season it appeared that Denver had a chance to catch the Lakers, but inconsistency down the stretch bumped them down to the fourth seed. They still have players like Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, and Kenyon Martin so they can be a very dangerous team if they get their act together.

Utah had a chance to lock up the #2 seed with a win in their final game at home against the Suns, but an ugly loss dropped them all the way to fifth. They are not the best team on the road and injuries to Carlos Boozer and Andrei Kirilenko will not help their cause.

This should be a close series as these teams match-up well with one another, but Denver takes it in six.

2010 NBA Playoffs- Eastern Conference Preview & Predictions

#1 Cleveland Cavaliers (NL) vs. #8 Chicago Bulls (NL)

If Cleveland has any thought of taking this team lightly all they need to do is watch the tapes from the Bulls and Celtics first round battle in last year’s playoffs that went all the way to a dramatic seventh game before Boston advanced with a win.

Lebron James comes into this series well rested and ready to go and will look to jump out to a quick lead over the Bulls by winning the first two games in Cleveland.

Chicago should be able to steal one at home as the Cavaliers advance in five.

#2 Orlando Magic (-1100) vs. #7 Charlotte Bobcats (+700)

Orlando is playing as well as anyone right now, winning their last six games and nine out of their last 10. With Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, and Jameer Nelson the Magic’s starting five is as solid as they come. When they are playing as well as they have been, they are just about unbeatable.

This will be the Bobcats first trip to the postseason and you can rest assured that veteran head coach Larry Brown will have them ready.

Charlotte goes down fighting as the Magic advance in five.

#3 Atlanta Hawks (-800) vs. #6 Milwaukee Bucks (+500)

Atlanta’s chances to win this series improved a bit when Milwaukee lost Andrew Bogut for the season with a broken hand, but the Bucks still have enough talent on their team to keep every game close. The Hawk’s will rely on the scoring of Joe Johnson and the rebounding of Al Horford to get the job done.

Milwaukee will rely heavily on John Salmons to lead the way and will need a huge contribution from rookie Brandon Jennings to have a chance to pull off the upset

This is shaping up as a seven game series with the Hawks using their home court advantage to advance to the next round.

#4 Boston Celtics (-180) vs. #5 Miami Heat (+160)

While this is not as potent a team as they have been in the past, Boston still found a way to win 50 games and lock up the fourth seed. Miami comes into the post season playing their best ball of the year having won nine out of the last 10 led by the play of their top scorer, Dwyane Wade.

The Celtics will have to rely on the vast experience of players like Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett while the Heat will rely on their current momentum and a stifling defense.

This one goes the distance with Miami advancing to the second round by winning game seven.
