Both teams are off to red hot starts and are the top two defensive teams in the league.

Memphis

The Grizzlies are having a remarkable season thus far. They are coming into this game riding a five game win streak with an 8-0 record at home and an astonishing 11-0 against the stacked Western Conference.

You can attribute these ridiculous numbers to Memphis being a complete, experienced, and smart basketball team. Memphis is leading the league is scoring defense, only allowing 92.4 points per game.

The interior presence of power forward Zach Randolph and center Marc Gasol have been anchoring their defense. Gasol is having an MVP caliber season, filling up the stat sheet with 20.1 points per game and 8.1 rebounds. Randolph is averaging 16.1 points per game along with 11.7 rebounds.

Along with these two big guys, the Grizzlies have arguably the best perimeter defender in the league with Tony Allen and a great decision making point guard with Mike Conley.

Memphis is off to their best start in franchise history and during their five game win streak they are winning by an average margin of 12.8 points per game.

Houston

The Rockets are coming into this game on three days of rest. Despite the much needed time off, the Rockets are still struggling to get healthy. Center Dwight Howard is still battling a knee injury and point guard Patrick Beverly is still suffering from a hamstring injury.

Although the injuries are hurting the Rockets’ chemistry, their record doesn’t show it. Houston is second in the league in team defense, behind Memphis, only allowing 92.8 points per game.

They have won seven of their last ten games and have an impressive 7-1 record on the road. Leading scorer, James Harden averaging 25.2 points per game has been on fire as of late. He dropped 34 points against the Bucks on Saturday to go along with seven assists, six rebounds, and four steals.

Veteran point guard Jason Terry got his first start of the season on Saturday, replacing Patrick Beverly.

In his season debut he added 18 points and hit four three pointers.

NBA Handicapping Trends:

  • Grizzlies are 10-7 ATS this year.
  • Rockets are 9-7-1 ATS this year.
  • Grizzlies are 6-3 ATS vs. Rockets in last three years.
  • Rockets are 19-17 ATS vs. Grizzlies since 1996.

NBA Gambling Prediction

This will be one of the most entertaining games in the NBA all season long. The Rockets will struggle to stop the frontline of the Grizzlies with Dwight Howard out. I expect the Grizzlies to come out and defend James Harden as a team.

With the absence of Howard, Harden won’t be able to get as many open shots. Memphis has been playing excellent basketball and it will continue over right into this game. Gasol and Randolph will wear down the Rockets on the inside and Conley will take advantage of Patrick Beverley being out.

Look for three point shooting to be the key indicator on who will come out this matchup on top.

Grizzlies 102, Rockets 95

Memphis will extend their winning streak and will remain on top of the loaded Western Conference.
