The San Antonio Spurs are coming off a home loss to the best team in the Western Conference and they might be headed for the same fate against the best in the East.

The Spurs had won 10 of 13 prior to a visit from the reigning champion Los Angeles Lakers and they were hoping that their hot streak combined with home court advantage would be enough to make a statement against the top dogs in the West. They did make a statement but unfortunately it was the wrong one.

The Lakers shutdown the Spurs 92-83 on their own court and now the Cavaliers will try to do the same. The Spurs simply aren’t the team they used to be and they aren’t good enough to beat the league’s elite any more.

What’s Happening With The Cavaliers

Overall, not too much. And not too much by their standards means wins in 14 of their last 15 games and outside of the one loss to the hot Milwaukee Bucks, who were caught them on the third game in four nights, the Cavs are just flat out rolling right now.

On top of that, they recently re-acquired center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who was traded away at the deadline and then bought out by the Washington Wizards. Now he’s back and the Cavaliers are even more dangerous.

What’s  Happening With The Spurs

It doesn’t make sense that the Spurs add Richard Jefferson, DeJuan Blair and get good efforts from other parts like George Hill, yet they are worse than they were last year when they had no depth.

The loss of point guard Tony Parker to injury actually provided a spark to the Spurs but they simply don’t look like much of a contender this year. The most telling sign is their record against teams above .500.

On the year, the Spurs are 42-28 but they are just 16-17 against winning teams. That means that they do most of their damage against bad teams (26-11).

Outlook & Pick

The Spurs are 11-3 against the Cavaliers in their last 14 meetings in San Antonio but over the last three years, the Cavs are 2-0 both straight up and against the spread.

The Cavs are young, deep, athletic and they play better defense. The Spurs are old, slow and they struggle to matchup against fast teams. This won’t be a pretty game to watch but the Cavaliers will be the victors at the end.

Pick: Cavaliers
