The teams met three times last year and Boston took two of the games, outscoring the Bulls by a combined 46 points.

Chicago lost to the Knicks on Thursday, 120-112, as Toney Douglas scored a career-high 30 points to pace the attack. Douglas made 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and the team as a whole put on an impressive display hitting 16-of-24 from behind the arc.

The Knicks held a 21-point lead at halftime, but another impressive showing from Derrick Rose kept the Bulls in the fight. Rose scored 24 with 14 assists, but rested the last 10 minutes of the game. It was an odd move, considering the score stood at 95-87 early in the fourth quarter. Thibodeau later explained he pulled key starters to keep the energy level up in an attempt to keep New York out of three-point range.

The loss evened Chicago’s record to 2-2 which is good for 1st in the Central, tied with Indiana. Derrick Rose has looked good to start the season, scoring 27.7 a game so far. He also leads the team in steals and assists. Rose will be the main catalyst for the team if they are to overcome two straight seasons with a .500 record where they have finished exactly 41-41 for two years running. So far, they are outscoring opponents 102-98, while ranking 4th in assists with 46.

Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics continued their early season roll, beating the Bucks on Thursday 105-102. The game was a big one for Paul Pierce as he scored 12 points in the overtime win to pass the 20,000-point mark for his career.

It wasn’t an easy win, as late in overtime the Celtics were struggling to hold a 97-95 lead. Pierce then hit a free throw to join exclusive company.

The win brought the Celtics record to 4-1, good for first in the Atlantic. Pierce is averaging 21.2 to start the season, while Kevin Garnett leads the team in rebounds with seven. The offense has gained steam scoring 105-plus points in three straight, averaging 98.8 for the season, to rank 17th. They defense is looking good, limiting opponents to 92.8.

The Celtics are on a roll right now, while Chicago needs to find a playmaker other than Rose. While this season should be a bit brighter for the Bulls, it will take time to find the pieces to put on the court to make it happen. Thibodeau still needs to find out who he can rely on late in the game, so expect Boston to add a win.
