2008-09 Sacramento Kings Wagering Preview and Futures

The Kings are +5000 to win the Western Conference title and +10000 to win the NBA Championship in the BetUS Sportsbook.

The Sacramento Kings (38-44 SU, 44-37-1 ATS, 43-35-4 O/U) remind of one of Harrison Ford’s best movies – Clear and Present Danger!

Even if you never saw that thrilling flick, the title is certainly befitting of a Sacramento Kings team that is going to be in big trouble in 2008-09 in the powerful Western Conference.

After moving veteran point guard Mike Bibby last season – and head case forward Ron Artest during the offseason, the Kings are now in full rebuilding mode, even if they want to try to skirt around the issue.

“You’re looking at the total picture with your team going forward, and how much better can it get the way it is versus what is the potential to get better by doing something different,” Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said. “What we decided to do is do something different. You know, if you have a big shade tree, shade’s good to a point. But if there’s too much shade, then the grass doesn’t get to grow.”

Petrie can talk about shade and trees all he wants, but the bottom line is the fact that the Kings will be young and raw for the next couple of seasons at the very least – and BetUS NBA wagering enthusiasts need to take advantage of that as quickly as possible.

Sacramento still has veteran center Brad Miller and one of the best all-around shooting guards in the game now in Kevin Martin (23.7 ppg), but have question marks at just about every position, including the backup spots to Martin and Miller.

The Kings are basically banking on their young players leading them to the promised land at some point in the near future.

Sacramento re-signed point guard Beno Udrih to a five-year deal, drafted athletic rookie small forward Donte Green and power forward Jason Thompson, the surprise pick of the first round of the 2008 Draft. Petrie is also praying that second-year center Spencer Hawes will be the answer in the middle.

Until the Kings’ young guns are ready for prime time, the team will continue to start mediocre veterans John Salmons and Mikki Moore at the forward spots.

Another situation that bears watching in Sacramento is the fact that second-year head coach Reggie Theus is staring directly at a lame-duck status situation after the team failed to agree to his request to pick up his third year option on his contract following this season.

While the Kings ranked eighth in scoring last season (102.5 ppg), they also were one of the worst defensive teams in the league, allowing a whopping 104.8 points per game (24th). The Kings allowed their opponents to shoot a blazing 37.4 percent from long distance, 25th overall.

Despite their on-court struggles last season, Sacramento managed to come through more often than not, posting a stellar 44-37-1 ATS mark that ranked ninth overall.
