There’s no denying that the Atlanta Hawks have matured into a true contender in the Eastern Conference. But bettors won’t take them truly seriously until they can beat the Cavs. Cleveland seeks a ninth straight victory over Atlanta tonight as it goes for its second consecutive 60-win campaign.
We have mixed signals from the Hawks entering this matchup. On one hand, they lost by 11 at home to Cleveland in the first meeting and watched LeBron James drop 48 points on them the last time they visited the Cavs. Also, they’re only 2-5 in their last seven on the road, losing three straight. But could their confidence be in the right place after a 17-point victory over the Lakers on Wednesday night? 
We’re better off looking at the spread stats before we decide what to do. While Cleveland has won six of its last seven against Atlanta by double-digits, it’s just 15-22 ATS at home this season. The Cavs fall into the usual sportsbook trap of powerhouse teams getting “over-favored” in their own buildings. The Hawks are one of the NBA’s better ATS teams (44-30 overall), even on the road. Despite their three consecutive road losses, those defeats came by one, three and seven points.
The Cavs should win but I like Atlanta to keep this one very tight. After all, the Hawks are 8-2 ATS over their last 10 games.
