NBA Betting – All-Star Game Preview & Pick

Like any All-Star game, the NBA All-Star game is a tough nut for bettors to crack. With the rosters changing every season, it’s hard to find rhyme or reason to your picks.

All we can do is study trends and hope the rosters haven’t changed too much from last season.

2010 NBA All-Star Game

Eastern Conference vs Western Conference
Sunday, February 14, 8:00 p.m. ET – Dallas, TX
Sportsbook favorite: No line posted AS OF YET due to injuries

Rookies vs. Sophmores Betting Odds – Sophmores -12.5

The first logical thing to do is check out recent All-Star game results. Sigh – turns out the East and West have each won five of the last 10 All-Star games. So much for that idea. Even from 1990-91 until now, the series is 9-9.

The next best thing to do is look at the individual players – their health, history and current performance.

The East won’t have Allen Iverson, who is staying home to be with his ailing daughter. Kevin Garnett is also slowed by his bum knee. The West won’t have Kobe Bryant, who will rest his injured ankle. That gives a huge advantage to the East. It wasn’t depending on washed up Iverson to score anyway and KG’s defense isn’t nearly as important in the soft atmosphere of the All-Star game.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook Kobe, on the other hand, is the West’s top offensive player and the All-Star game MVP in three of the last eight seasons. The East may not have Derrick Rose at point guard but Rajon Rondo can fill that role.

The East is loaded not only with experienced guys, but experienced guys in their prime. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh (a.k.a. Team 2010 Free Agency), and Dwight Howard are all arguably top-10 NBA stars and are at their physical peak. The West’s top guns are aging (Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan, Steve Nash), hurt (Bryant, Chris Paul) or young and inexperienced (Kevin Durant, Zach Randolph).

The West has more depth and I wouldn’t be surprised if Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony had monster games – especially Durant. But the East All-Stars have more star power and a healthier roster. For that reason, I like them to rain on Dallas’ parade on Sunday.

Pick: Eastern Conference

BONUS PICK: Slam Dunk Contest

Look for DeMar DeRozan to steal the Slam Dunk contest. Of course, he has to win a Dunk-In against Eric Gordon to even qualify.

But I think the Dunk-In winner will be nice and warmed up for the contest while the other guys shake off rust for their first few dunks.
