Take a good look at the Spurs, because what you see this season is definitely NOT going to be what you see in the near future.
The Sons of Gregg Popovich have revolved around the Tim Duncan-Tony Parker-Manu Ginobili threesome for so long they just seem to be a part of the NBA fabric. But at 34 Duncan has lots of miles on his body and the team needs to start looking for another centerpiece.
Parker is in the final year of his contract and has said he wants to return, but who knows what the future holds? And Ginobili never seems to be at 100 percent.
But before Father Time takes a sledge hammer to the Spurs, they’ll crank it up for one last run, monitor minutes of their core players, work in some younger players with one eye toward the future and circle the wagons in April and May for one last title run.
Popovich still has enough talent to make life tough for younger, less-experienced teams, and Pop should have some fun tweaking things. If the Spurs decide they like Ginobili to come off the bench and play hard for 25 minutes rather than start, that’s good news for George Hill, who impressed in the playoffs against Dallas last season.
And Tiaggo Splitter, a 2007 draft choice who has spent the last two seasons ripping up the pro league in Spain, should supplant Matt Bonner at the center spot.
For some reason the Spurs overlooked Richard Jefferson’s disastrous first season in San Antonio and re-signed him to a $40-million deal. Jefferson has only two problems last season – he couldn’t score and he couldn’t defend. Other than that, he should be worth every penny.
Antonio McDyess and DeJuan Blair are decent bigs off the bench.
Surprising stat: In the playoff series against Dallas last season, the Under covered in 5 games and the other game was a push.
Strengths: Veteran leadership. This team is all about the playoffs, and besides injuries, nothing much that happens between now and April is very important.
Weaknesses: With age comes injuries.
Playoffs? Pretty much a certainty.
Win total projection for 2010-11: They will pretty much win as many games as necessary to get the 7th or 8th seed in the West. Probably around 47-50.
