On paper it looked brilliant. Take the best big man in the league, post his butt on the block, force teams to collapse on him and then kick the ball out to any one of a half-dozen guys who can rain 3s on opponents before they can hope to recover defensively.

Worked great a couple of years ago when the Magic burned the Kevin Garnett-less Celtics in the Eastern finals. Worked not so great last season after in essence dumping Hedo Turkoglu for Vince Carter, a move that just seemed to mess things up offensively. It just didn’t mesh last season for the Magic.

Dwight Howard was still great, but PG Jameer Nelson wound up as the team’s leading scorer (never good when the PG is the No. 1 option), Rashard Lewis’s shooting slumped along with his defense, and Carter seemed to get just a little bit older with each trip downcourt. What to do with a talented team that seemed to have regressed a bit and now must deal with a team in its own state that is ready to rip apart the league and not leave many prisoners? Orlando’s response is to tweak the business model a bit and hope for the best.

So for the early part of the season Lewis – who basically invented the stretch 4 position – will see at least some minutes at small forward as the Magic allot power forward playing time to Brandon Bass.

Bass is kind of an anomaly in that he plays as hard on the defensive end as when his team has the ball, and he could provide some much-needed balance. Where that leaves Carter is anyone’s guess. VC cannot guard opposing shooting guards without contributing to Stan Van Gundy’s stomach problems, and just about everyone believes that it’s time for JJ Redick to start at the 2 anyway.

Van Gundy will have to sort it all out in the next few weeks, but in case anyone hasn’t been paying attention, in the meantime the Eastern Conference is not exactly in decline. Barring serious injury to Dwayne Wade or LeBron James, the Heat will supplant the Magic at the top of the Southeast Division, whatever that means. And the talented Hawks are still in the mix.

Should be an interesting season in the House of the Mouse.

Surprising stat: Rashard Lewis’s scoring average (14.1) was his lowest since his second year in the league.
Strengths: Howard has no peer defensively.
Weaknesses: This team just doesn’t seem playoff tough enough.
Playoffs? Definite. No. 2 or 3 seed in the East.
