So what’s new with these guys? Nothing. And everything.

This is a team battling lots of demons. In the last couple of years the Hornets have fallen out of the playoff pool in the Western Conference, changed ownership, dealt away one of the best young point guards in the league and are in danger of losing the face of the franchise.

Priority No. 1 as the season gets set to kick off is keeping Chris Paul productive, happy and quiet about the team that signs his paychecks. Paul made noises over the summer about getting some sugar from a high-profile playoff team unless the Hornets magically become a contdner, and if he becomes the newest star to jump ship, that will basically sink this franchise for another five years.

Until then there is a season to play, and Paul and the Hornets will have to stop the bleeding. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

They won 56 games three seasons ago (second-best in the West), 49 the following year and only 37 last year. Thirty-seven was an ugly number for another season – that’s how many games Paul missed with an injury. To get back to the playoffs and possibly entice Paul into staying in NO, the Hornets would have to improve by at least about 10 games.

That’s a tall order, considering it’s pretty much the same group that struggled last season.

The only newcomer of note is combo wing player 2-3 Trevor Ariza, who comes over from Houston in that convoluted 4-team swap in which the Hornets gave up Darren Collison to Indiana. Other than that, not much is fresh.

David West is still an underappreciated power forward, Emeka Okafor is a good but undersized center, and the team can’t wait for April, when it will be rid of Peja Stojakovic and his ridiculous $15 million contract.

Surprising stat: Monty Williams is the league’s youngest head coach (38).
Strengths: Chris Paul when he’s healthy.
Weaknesses: Lack of perimeter players and lack of overall depth.
Playoffs? Probably not.
