Milwaukee Bucks
Sportsbook.com Bucks Odds to win NBA title – 42/1
Key players added – Corey Maggette
Key players lost – None
The NBA’s Little Engine That Could returns this season — the surprising Bucks, who got white hot right after the All-Star break last season, won 12 of 13 and stunned everyone by barging into the playoffs as a 6 seed and talking the lackadaisical Hawks to a 7th game.
They did it after losing their one expected superstar – Michael Redd – to an injury that opened the door to another star in the making, rookie Brandon Jennings.
Jennings and the improved Andrew Bogut formed the core of a team that used a pass-first offense and an aggressive defense to become the biggest surprise in a league in which there are precious few.
At minimum, the Bucks and coach Scott Skiles will now force other teams to actually game plan a bit as a trip to Wisconsin is not longer a guaranteed W. Still, there are questions as the season approaches:
- Will Bogut be healthy when the season starts, and will he be able to regain his second-half form?
- Can Jennings improve his shooting? 37.1` is, well, not very good.
- Can newcomers Corey Maggette and Drew Gooden fit in? They’ll certainly get minutes, but neither are complete players.
- What are the Bucks going to do with Redd, who is due back in February and will find a team 180 degrees from the one he left with a knee injury? Can red adjust to not being The Man?
- Can the team just pick up where it left off, or was last season just a serendipitous once-in-a-decade run?
Surprising stat: Milwaukee scored just 143 total points in losing Games 6 and 7 to the Hawks in the first round of the playoffs last season.
Strengths: Jennings’s ability to create, and take over games offensively for short stretches.
Weaknesses: If Bogut can’t return to form, there is a big problem in the paint.
Playoffs? Forty- to 50-percent chance. Depends a lot on Bogut.
