Miami Heat
Sportsbook.com Heat Odds to win NBA title – 7/4
Key players added – LeBron James, Chris Bosh
Key players lost – Michael Beasley, Jermaine O’Neal

What’s bothersome about the Heat is that the franchise has been able to avoid eating its vegetables and gets to go right to the dessert. They are going to be scary good simply not because they drafted well (1990s Bulls) or traded well (2008 Celtics) or got lucky and a good player fell to them in the draft (current OKC Thunder).

They are good because they had a huge advantage over other teams (climate+Dwyane Wade) and LeBron James was able to manipulate a system put in place to ensure somewhat of a level playing field.

With three young stars in the prime of their careers the Heat no longer have to go through the annoying process of building a team. Drafts are for losers, and assuming Wade, James and Bosh are never mentioned in the same sentence with ACL, Miami is set for most of the next decade.

They’ll be able to pick off the vine and have their choice of aging stars who want to grab a quick ring on their way out the door, and if competitive balance is the casualty, so be it.

There is no middle ground here. While success for some teams is making a playoff run and others just making the playoffs, the Heat either spray champagne all over each other minutes after the final game of the season, or the whole thing is a colossal failure.

Jeff Van Gundy says that the team will win more than 70 games, easily win the title and could even threaten the Lakers’ record of 33 wins in a row. We’ll see about that.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

What the mind-bending accumulation of talent (Miami now has 2 of the top 3 players in the league, and a top-25 complementary player) has done is freed the team from having to worry about the regular season. Talent alone will be enough to carry these guys past the flotsam and jetsum of the NBA, which means they have to really gear up only for the occasional game against the Lakers, Celtics or Magic.

Since the summer-long party celebration in South Beach, the Heat have gone about the process of filling out a roster. NBA rules dictate that each team have five players on the court while the ball is live, so NBA lifers Mike Miller, Eddie House and Juwon Howard were brought on board. Mario Chalmers and Udonis Haslem will probably start with the Ego Three and could wind up being the answer to a trivia question.

Surprising stat: Not really much of a surprise, but Wade led the Heat in scoring, turnovers, steals and assists last season. He might not lead them in any of those categories this year.
Strengths: Three guesses
Weaknesses: It’s a stretch, but will winning so easily during the season prepare them for the work that’s needed in the playoffs?
Playoffs? Come on. Anything less than an Eastern Conference 1 seed would shock the league.
Win total projection for 2010-11: 68-70
