Key players added – Tony Allen
Key players lost – Ronnie Brewer

What you saw last season is pretty much what you’ll get this year, minus the abbreviated Allen Iverson experiment, to be sure, and the Grizz are just hoping that their young nucleus gets better with another full season under its belt.

Mike Conley, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol stayed healthy last season, but the Grizz lost 8 of their last 10 and ended the year 40-42, 10 games out of the playoffs.

This season the same bunch returns after an off-season in which only minor tweaks to the roster were made.

The big news over the summer was the re-signing of Rudy Gay, who had made no secret that if Memphis wasn’t going to give him a max deal, he would look elsewhere.

The Grizz quickly caved, Gay got his big payday and Memphis has its small forward for the next half-decade.

Whether Gay becomes The Man remains to be seen, but at least the pieces are in place for Memphis to make a move upward in a Southwest Division which is either getting old (San Antonio, Dallas), spinning its wheels (Houston) or about to be gutted (New Orleans). Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

The Grizz have been playoff outsiders for so long, most fans don’t even realize they actually had a 3-year post-season run, but in 2004, ’05 and ’06 they were swept each time, and haven’t had a sniff of the playoff since. If they want to play again in late April and into the spring, coach Lionbel Hollins will have to get the core players to commit more on the defensive end.

With that in mind the Grizz signed Tony Allen from Boston over the summer.

Allen will drive fans nuts with his poor shooting and lack of ballhandling ability, but he’ll he’ll dig in against strong 2s and other small forwards.

Surprising stat: All five starters – Mayo, Conley, Randolph, Gay and Gasol – averaged double figures in scoring last season.
Strengths: Health and youth. Every starter except Gasol (69) played at least 80 games last season.
Weaknesses: Everyone is good but no one is great, and great players get calls at end of close games.
Playoffs? Long shot, but several teams in the West might be taking steps back this season.
