Round up the usual suspects for another title run that will fall short, probably in the first round of the playoffs. The Mavs have stayed competitive for as long as Dirk Nowitzki has been around, but like the teammates around him, Dirk has a lot of miles on the transmission.

Owner Mark Cuban can’t stomach the thought of rebuilding as long as Dirk can put up 23-25 a game, so Dallas will hang on for another year even though it has no realistic shot at a deep playoff run.

The Mavs showed courage last year when they shook the rotation by importing Brendan Haywood and Caron Butler from the Wizards, but in the end it did nothing to prevent another flameout in the playoffs, to the Spurs.

The problem was a lack of offense – in each of the four playoff defeats the Mavs failed to score more than 90 points. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

The slow playoff pace was particularly difficult for forward Shawn Marion, who loves to run the wings but struggled when played slowed and was held to under 9 a game by San Antonio.

Without a second scoring option, teams can easily withstand Nowitzki’s 25 a game.

A huge ($84 million) payroll prevented any major moves in the offseason, so everyone is back for another go-round. Jason Kidd is 37 and hoping that the last five playoff games (35 points, 31 assists total) are not a preview of what’s to come this season.

Jason Terry is not too far behind him – in fact the top 6 players in the rotation are all on the bad side of 30.

Surprising stat: The Mavericks had the second-best record in the Western Conference last season –55-27.
Strengths: Nowitzki has shown few signs of slowing down, the possible exception being a slight drop in his rebound average.
Weaknesses: Can these guys continue to produce with every key player over 30? Are Cuban and coach Rick Carlisle willing to reduce Nowitzki’s minutes and sacrifice regular season games to keep him fresh for the playoffs?
Playoffs? They should be OK, but all eight playoff teams in the West won 50 or more games last season and if the Mavs can’t stand up physically, they could be in for a surprise.
