Outside of assistant coach Larry Drew taking over as head man in place of Mike Woodson, this is pretty much the same Atlanta Hawks team that:

1. Plays well at home
2. Makes the playoffs
3. Loses in the playoffs

It’s hard to envision any other scenario for this group this season, although Drew insists that the new offense will put an end to the isolation-and-slash style that Woodson used to much success in the regular season and little success in the playoffs.

The offense may be different, but the faces haven’t changed. The Hawks’ starting lineup will still include scoring 2 Joe Johnson, dunk machine Josh Smith, undersized center Al Horford, and Marvin Williams. Mike Bibby still has a tenuous hold on the starting PG spot, but only because the Hawks don’t feel that Jeff Teague is ready. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

Bibby’s play deteriorated last season and by mid-season the job will probably belong to Teague if Teague can avoid tripping over the halfcourt line.

The Hawks’ big news in the offseason was re-signing Johnson, who must make amends with the fan base after telling booing patrons that “he doesn’t care whether they show up or not” in the playoffs. Johnson seems incapable of making even the remotest connection between his $119-million contract and the fans who pay to watch him play. Whatever. We’ll see what JJ shows on the court this season now that he has the money. Five years down the road, when he’s 34 and on the downside, the fans may weigh in again.

With the same cast of characters (throw in super sub Jamal Crawford, who gets starter minutes), matching last season’s win total (53, up from 47 the previous season) might still be a stretch.

There are reports that Miami is a bit improved, and in general the Eastern Conference as a whole is stronger.

Surprising stat: No team had a better home record (34-7) than the Hawks last season.
Strengths: Crawford is the top offensive sub in the league. Drew’s new offense at least gives them a chance in the playoffs when the tempo slows to a crawl.
Weaknesses: The players’ basketball IQ is somewhat south of triple digits. Street ball can get you a 25-point win at home in January when the visiting team is on the second night of a back-to-back set, but it’s poison in the playoffs against good teams.
Playoffs? Probable, but as a 5 or 6 seed.
