NBA Championship Future Lines Preview

Dave Schwab weighs in with his 2011 NBA championship predictions and odds article. Which teams will be in the thick of things for the upcoming 2010-2011 NBA season…

NBA Championship Future Lines Preview

While all the talk this offseason has revolved around the new power alliance down in Miami, the Los Angeles Lakers are still the two-time defending world champions and until a team figures out how to beat them four times in a playoff series, that will remain the case.

Here is a look at the top contenders from each conference along with their current odds to win the 2011 NBA Championship from Bodog.com.

NBA Eastern Conference

Miami Heat          7/4

With the arrival of Lebron James from Cleveland and Chris Bosh from Toronto to join Dwyane Wade, Miami has anointed itself the team to beat in 2011 and beyond. Given the current future line, the odds makers obviously believe they are right. There is no reason this team should not coast through the regular season all the way to the conference finals.

At that point we will see how much team chemistry three huge egos have.

Orlando Magic     11/1

Being billed as the only team with a possible shot at competing with the Heat, Orlando would love nothing better than a chance to send the dream team home early from the playoffs.

The Magic have made some off season moves as well adding Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson to join their own big three; Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson Rashard Lewis.

Boston Celtics      12/1

The ‘over the hill gang` added another aging veteran star, signing Shaquille O’Neil the other week. With pretty much the same cast that took Boston all the way to the Finals last season, this team is still a threat to make some noise in the conference.

The Celtics primary concern will be keeping everyone healthy enough to have a legitimate shot at getting there again.

NBA Western Conference

Los Angeles Lakers       11/4

Head Coach Phil Jackson has decided to come back for at least one more season which is great news for Los Angeles fans. The other great news is that Derek Fisher also decided to stay with the team, ensuring that the lineup will be pretty much intact from last season’s championship team.

This team has already shown that it can maintain the drive and motivation to win multiple titles, so the situation in Miami is just fuel to the fire for Kobe and Co.

Dallas Mavericks           18/1

Dallas Owner Mark Cuban missed out of most of the best players from the free agent frenzy but was able to resign the signature player of his franchise; Dirk Nowitzki. The Mavericks also signed first round draft pick Dominique Jones who was acquired from Memphis in a draft day trade.

In another big move they traded away Eric Dampier for Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca. How much better they will be remains to be seen, but most likely Dallas has still not done enough to get by LA in the West.

Denver Nuggets             18/1

After Los Angeles, Denver is probably the best of the rest in the Western Conference. Their lineup remains pretty much intact from last season’s team that finished with a 53-29 record, just four less wins than the Lakers. The Nuggets are inching closer to a deal that will keep Carmelo Anthony in Denver for at least three more seasons.

If something does not get done before the start of this year, this could end up being a major distraction for this team.

2010 NBA Championship Prediction

While it is still early and a lot can happen between now and then, I’m going with Orlando over Los Angeles in seven games.
