Everything was going great for the Blazers last season until April 18.

Portland had stormed into the playoffs by winning of their last 11 and had snatched home-court advantage away from Houston in the first playoff round.

Key players added – Andre Miller

Key players lost – None

Then the Blazers laid an egg at home in Game 1, losing by 27 in a confidence-shaking defeat from which they never recovered. The Rockets finished them off in six and the Blazers have spent the summer and fall trying to get back their mojo.

There aren’t many changes from the young group that went 54-28 last season, but one notable addition – point guard Andre Miller – might help the Blazers steer through rough seas better than they did last season. Miller is comfy in either an uptempo or halfcourt offense, and should help emerging superstar Brandon Roy get shots where and when he wants them.

The Blazers are hoping that LaMarcus Aldridge can make a jump into the upper echelons of power forwards, but to do that he’ll need to work on positioning more. He can already shoot.

And who knows if Portland will ever get anything close to a full season from Greg Oden, who seems to pile up injuries faster than Kevin Durant accumulates double-doubles.

Surprising stat: Only Steve Blake, who figures to loose his starting job to Miller, shot over 40 percent from 3-point range last season.

Strengths: 1. Roy is one of the most fundamentally sound 2-guards in the league. 2. Portland digs in defensively (No. 4 in the NBA last season). 3. Nate McMillan is one of the league’s top coaches.

Weaknesses: If Oden spends any significant amount of time in the trainer’s room, there are major problems up front.

Playoffs? For sure. Healthy Blazers should reach at least Western finals.
