Jim O’Brien usually has an agreement with his players. Do whatever the hell you want on offense as long as you dig in on defense. It got O’Brien’s Pierce-Walker Celtics to the Eastern Conference finals in 2002, but last season in Indiana injuries and attitude got in the way and the team finished at 36-46.

Many of the same characters are back, and the Pacers have at least the potential to challenge for a playoff spot. Larry Bird brought in PG Earl Watson, if for no other reason than to light a fire under start T.J. Ford, and the other newcomer of note is Dahntay Jones, who will probably be an end-of-the-rotation player.
Otherwise, what you saw last year is what you’ll see this season. Troy Murphy, Danny Granger and Mike Dunleavy will score plenty, and O’Brien hopes that defenses will have to play second-year center Roy Hibbert honestly, opening up things outside. Brandon Rush is a comer at shooting guard.
The Eastern Conference is improving, but there are only three playoff locks (Boston, Orlando, Cleveland), and the Pacers could be in a scrum with 8 or 10 other teams for the final five spots.
Surprising stat: Indiana was one of the best cover teams in the NBA last season – 44-36-2 ATS.
Strengths: There is experience up and down the lineup, just the type of team O’Brien likes. If they stay healthy they might make some noise.
Weaknesses: The Pacers would love Ford to spend a little more energy on defense.
