GM Chris Wallace has made three key moves in the past few years, and none of them make sense.

Maybe Pau Gasol shot his way out of Memphis, but the Grizz should have been able to get something for him.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

Key players added – Allen Iverson, Zach Randolph, Hasheem Thabeet

Key players lost – None

And does Wallace have positive information about the free agent signings of veteran NBA bad boys Zach Randolph and Allen Iverson that is not available to the rest of the basketball world?

Maybe Wallace figures he’s out the door if the Grizz once again don’t get within a sniff of the playoffs. At any rate, Randolph and Iverson will suck up minutes that should go to younger players, retarding the team’s long-term growth. No wonder all Wallace did in Boston was get coffee for Rick Pitino.

Randolph will join Marc Gasol and Rudy Gay on the starting front line. O.J. Mayo (18.5 ppg last season) will start in the backcourt, but his numbers will dip in direct proportion to how many minutes Iverson steals from PG Mike Conley. Hakim Warrick’s minutes will also slide.

Surprising stat: Memphis had great scoring balance last season, with five players averaging in double figures. But the Grizzlies rank 29 of 30 teams in total scoring, at just 93.9 a game.

Strengths: Mayo is developing into an NBA horse. He turns the ball over too much (226 last season), partially because he gets touches in just about every offensive possession.

Weaknesses: Even if you assume that Randolph and Iverson won’t cause problems as they try to bleed out another contract next season, their presence produces a bizarre mix of age and youth.

Playoffs? You could take the 24 they won last year and the 22 they won in 2007-08, and it still wouldn’t have been enough to make the playoffs last season. Not gonna happen.
