iston fans have to be wondering just what the hell is going on.
Was the Allen Iverson deal made to sell replica shirts in the pro shop? Dealing away the guts of the team (Chauncey Billups) for the disruptive Iverson was a move few thought would make the team better.
Key players added – Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva, Chris Wilcox
Key players lost – Rasheed Wallace, Allen Iverson
And it didn’t. Iverson, who played the same position as shooting guard Rick Hamilton, is gone. But in his place is Ben Gordon, another guy who plays the same position as Hamilton.
Other than that mix and match, the Pistons are weaker up front with the departure of Rasheed Wallace and the arrivals of Charlie Villanueva and Chris Wilcox. Rodney Stuckney has the point all to himself this year.
The Pistons played last season like they couldn’t wait to hit the golf course. They lost their last three in the regular season, then hardly put up much of a fight against the Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs.
Perhaps GM Joe Dumars is keeping his powder dry to make a run at a big-name free agent next summer, but this season doesn’t look any more promising than last year.
Surprising stat: At 34-48 the Pistons were 28th in the league last season at covering the spread.
Strengths: Hamilton is a solid 2 guard, and Gordon can put the ball in the hoop from inside a locked station wagon.
Weaknesses: Detroit will get dominated in the paint . . . its bigs (McDyess, Maxiell, Kwame Brown, Wilcox, Villaneuva) are a below-average group.
Playoffs? Right now it looks like another coin flip.
