Over/under regular season wins Odds: 47.5 (over -130, under +100)

The door never seems to shut on the Mavericks. For nine straight seasons they have won 50 games, and while they have zero world championships, somehow they are always in the discussion.

Owner Mark Cuban just can’t stomach the time-honored NBA way to the top – get really bad, get good draft choices and build. Cuban would have ulcers in year of that scenario.

Key players added – Shawn Marion

Key players lost – None

So the Mavs keep on keepin’ on, with a lineup of over-30 vets. The offense, as always, will go through Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas will try to bleed one more productive season out of point guard Jason Kidd (remember, they gave up Devin Harris for Kidd a few years ago), and Cuban imported another decent wing player in Shawn Marion.

Erick Dampier and Josh Howard also figure to start, and PG/SG Jason Terry heads up a productive bench.

It’s a fact that good veteran teams almost always win in the NBA while good young teams lose, and the Mavs will certainly win their share of games.

But these guys are going to need an infusion of youth real soon to keep things together much beyond this season.

Surprising stat: At age 36 Jason Kidd averaged nearly 9 assists a game and shot 40 percent from 3-point territory.

Strengths: Veterans don’t panic, and this team started slowly last season and still finished 50-32

Weaknesses: Eventually (problem when Nowitzki starts to fade) this franchise will no longer be in the NBA’s upper echelon.

Playoffs? Yes.
