Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 Lines

It all comes down to this Sunday’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Speedway to set the final four-driver field for NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Championship the following Sunday at Homestead.

NASCAR Sprint Cup- Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 Preview and Prediction
Race: Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Speedway
Date: Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014
Time: 3 p.m. (ET)
Broadcast: ESPN

The green flag for this Sunday’s race is set to wave at 3 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Jimmie Johnson was already eliminated from the Chase heading into the Eliminator Round, but that did stop him from winning last week’s race. Kevin Harvick rallied for a second-place finish in that race, while Brad Keselowski squeezed his way through the pack to take third.

The following is a look at my top favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday’s race based on odds provided by Bovada.

The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)

It is easy to see why Kevin Harvick has been opened as a 13/4 odds-on favorite to win this Sunday’s race. The No. 4 team’s back is against the wall in eighth-place in the current Sprint Cup standings despite last week’s productive run at Texas.

This kind of win-and-you-are-in environment has a way of bringing-out the best in a quality driver and Harvick would be at the top of my list heading into this race, The real reason he is this week’s favorite to win is his three checkered flags in his last four Sprint Cup races at Phoenix including a victory in this event last season.

The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)

Joey Logano has had a break-out season in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series with five previous trips to Victory Lane this year in a point race. His No. 22 car is at the top of the current Sprint Cup standings with 4072 points, but just like the other seven drivers in the Eliminator Round, a win this Sunday is the only way to guarantee a spot in the field of four for next Sunday’s championship run at Homestead. Adding a bit more value to his 10/1 betting odds to win this race is a fourth-place finish in the first race at Phoenix this season.

The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)

The chances that a driver from this group completely upsets the apple cart with a victory on Sunday are not that good given what is on the line for the top contenders left in the Chase. That is why I am going with Ryan Newman again this week as my top longshot. His odds to win have been set at 28/1, yet the No. 31 car is still in the Chase and currently third in the point race standings after finishing third at Martinsville and 15th last week at Texas. Newman’s recent results at Phoenix have been mixed, but he has finished in the top 10 in seven of his last nine trips around this track in a Sprint Cup race starting with a victory in the first race here in 2010.
