NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series rolls into Bristol Motor Speedway for the first race this season at this track for the running of the Food City 500.

NASCAR Sprint Cup- Food City 500 Preview and Prediction
Race: Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway
Date: Sunday, March 16, 2014
Time: 1 p.m. (ET)
Broadcast: FOX

Odds By Bovada

All the action is set to get underway at 1 p.m. and the race will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

Brad Keselowski placed third in his first two point races this season and last Sunday he broke through with a victory in Las Vegas. Dale Earnhardt Jr. kept up his blistering pace with a second-straight second place finish after winning at Daytona and Paul Menard made his way to third.

The following is a look at my top favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday’s race based on odds provided by Bovada.

The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)

It is hard to bet against Jimmie Johnson at 7/1 especially since you get the feeling he is due for a victory this week.

The defending Sprint Cup champion has been in the hunt in his first three races this year with a fifth-place finish at Daytona followed by back-to-back sixth-place finishes over the last two weeks.

The No. 48 car is currently in fourth place in this year’s Sprint Cup standings with 117 total points, which is just 16 points behind Dale Jr.

Last season’s run at Bristol was forgettable with two finishes outside the top 20, but Johnson did post eight top-10 finishes in his previous nine Sprint Cup runs at this track including a victory in this race in 2010.

The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)

Kasey Kahne has been relatively quiet so far this season, but the No. 5 car continues to move in the right direction with an eighth-place finish last week after poor showings at both Daytona and Phoenix.

The team may be buried in 15th place in the point standings, but it has been opened at 10/1 to break through this week with a win and for good reason.

Kahne comes into Sunday’s race as the defending champion and for good measure he followed-up that checkered flag with a second-place finish in the second race at Bristol last season.

The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)

This is not the best track in the world for picking longshots as the odds are stacked against the rest of the field when it comes to the top six or seven drivers on Bovada’s list of odds. If you still feel compelled to make a play on a driver with long odds than I would go with Carl Edwards at 22/1.

The No. 99 car has moved into seventh place in the standings with 105 points on the strength of an eighth-place finish at Phoenix and a fifth-place finish in last week’s race.

Edwards’ recent performance at Bristol is nothing to write home about, but he does have two previous victories at this track in 2007 and 2008 on his Sprint Cup resume.
