2012 Food City 500 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series returns to the East Coast this week for the running of the Food City 500, which is the fourth point race of the season. Defending Cup champion Tony Stewart notched his first victory this season with a win last Sunday in Las Vegas.

Jimmie Johnson finished a close second for his second-straight top five finish and Greg Biffle remained hot by taking third.

He is now the current leader in the point standings by 10 points with a total of 125 points.

The following is a closer look at our favorite, contender, and longshot picks for Sunday’s race with odds provided by Bovada.

The Favorite (odds of less than 10/1)

Kyle Busch won the Bud Shootout at Daytona to open the 2012 season, but he has basically been a non-factor in his first three point races with just one top-10 finished. This week, he has been opened as a 5/1 favorite to win at a track he has owned over the past three seasons.

Busch has worked his way to victory lane in four of his last six races at Bristol including a win in this race in 2009 and 2011.

Overall, he has five victories and five other top-10 finishes in just 14 career races at this track.

The Contender (odds of 10/1 to 19/1)

This week’s top contender at 10/1 is Matt Kenseth. He has already won NASCAR’s biggest race this season with a first-place finish at Daytona, but it is his past record at Bristol that actually adds most of the value to these odds. Kenseth has finished in the top 10 in seven of his last eight races at Bristol and has two career victories here.  [ad-8757089]

He raced his way to a fourth-place finish in last year’s race after starting from the 11th position.

The Longshot (odds of 20/1 +)

Last week in Las Vegas, Ryan Newman came very close to taking the checkered flag with a fourth-place finish in the Kobolt Tools 400. This top-five finish moved him to 13th-place in the overall standings with a total of 86 points. Newman has been opened as a 25/1 longshot to win this week, but his past performance at Bristol adds quite a bit of value to these odds.

He has finished in the top 10 in six of his last seven races at this track.

This includes a 10th-place finish in last year’s race after starting 21st. Overall, he has finished in the top 10 in 12 of his 20 career races here.
