Race: Toyota/SaveMart 350 – Infineon Raceway
Date: Sunday, June 26, 2011
Time: 3:18 PM ET (scheduled green flag)
TV: 3:00 PM ET on TNT

The Cup Series only runs on two road courses each season out of 36 races, where drivers get to show their skills at both right and left hand turns, clutching and shifting, negotiating hills and tight turns, and other conditions not typically associated with stock car racing.

The Cup Series has visited Infineon Raceway in Sonoma CA once a year since 1989 for a total of 22 races to date.

Chevy drivers have won five of the past eight races here, with two wins by Dodge (Kasey Kahne and Juan Montoya) and one by Toyota, it’s only win at the track with driver Kyle Busch.

The last Ford driver to win here was Ricky Rudd in 2002.

Safe Bet: (odds of less than 10/1)

– Jeff Gordon (7/2): Though Gordon’s last win at Infineon came in 2006, he remains, by far, the winningest active Cup driver here with five victories in 18 starts including 14 top-10 finishes. Gordon finished 5th in this race last year and 3rd in 2008, and it’s worth noting that he has two Cup wins already this season. Gordon qualified 13th and was 18th on the speed chart in Happy Hour.

Mid Range: (odds between 10/1 – 20/1)

– Kurt Busch (14/1): Kurt had the fastest lap in first practice on Friday and followed it up with a 2nd and a 3rd in Saturday’s two practice sessions. Though he’s never won at Infineon, Busch has finished as high as 3rd here in 2005, driving a Roush Ford at the time. Busch will start the race from 11th.

Long Shot: (odds of 20/1 or greater)

– Jamie McMurray (30/1): McMurray tends to be underrated as a road course racer, having finished as high as 2nd here (2004 in a Ganassi Dodge) and qualifying 2nd for Sunday’s race. Jamie had the fastest car in practice Saturday morning and was 2nd-fastest in Happy Hour practice.

Last year was his first Infineon race in an EGR Chevy, posting a 15th-place finish.

Summary:

In a race that often comes down to pit strategy and fuel mileage, picking a winner at Infineon is always a bit unpredictable.

Last year, Marcos Ambrose was leading the race when he came to a stop on the track trying to conserve fuel under caution, handing the win to Jimmie Johnson.
