That’s because this track underwent a major reconfiguration and repaving project since the last race here in February.

Given the dramatic changes, drivers and pundits alike are split on whether teams that are normally successful here will be as dominant as they have been in the past, or whether a surprise winner could be in the making, perhaps even a non-Chase driver.

Friday’s first practice session was led by Jeff Burton and the second practice by Paul Menard, teammates at Richard Childress Racing. Qualifying takes place Saturday morning.

• Safe Bet: (odds of 10/1 or less)

Carl Edwards (7/1): Edwards won this race from the pole last year after leading 93 laps. He was 2nd on the practice chart in Happy Hour and will be going for the win Sunday to try and keep a hard-charging Tony Stewart, who also runs well at PIR, behind him in points. Edwards has five top-5 finishes at Phoenix in 14 starts. He finished 28th in the spring race after starting from the pole.

• Mid Range: (odds between 10/1 – 20/1)

Kevin Harvick (15/1): As noted above, the RCR cars looked fast in practice Friday. Although Harvick was 23rd in first practice on Friday, he moved up to 10th on the speed chart in Happy Hour. Kevin has two previous Cup wins at Phoenix, having swept the track in 2006, and finished 4th in the spring race. [ad-8757089]

• Long Shot: (odds of greater than 20/1)

Dale Earnhardt Jr. (22/1): Earnhardt Jr. is also a two-time winner at PIR, though his wins took place in ’03-’04, when he drove for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Junior ran 14th in this race last year and 10th in the spring race. He was 24th on the speed chart in Happy Hour, but hopes to have more speed in the car by the time the green flag drops on Sunday.

Summary:

There is a 30% chance of rain Saturday night and a 20% chance of rain Sunday; moisture could have an adverse effect on the rubbering-in process that the track has undertaken to try and widen the racing groove. The winningest driver here is Jimmie Johnson with four wins in 16 starts and he also has the best average finish at a low 4.8.

Jeff Gordon won the spring race at PIR earlier this year.
