Race: Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen – Watkins Glen International
Date: Sunday, August 14, 2011
Time: 1:19 PM ET (scheduled green flag)
TV: 1:00 PM ET on ESPN

The Cup Series has been racing here once a year since 1986, with Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and Mark Martin the only multi-race winners. Kyle Busch and AJ Allmendinger will start on the front row, with Marcos Ambrose and Jimmie Johnson on row 2.

Two road-course “ringers,” Brian Simo and PJ Jones, failed to qualify on time.

Juan Pablo Montoya won this race last year from a third-place starting spot.

Safe Bet:

(odds of less than 10/1)

• Kyle Busch (6/1): Both Kurt and Kyle Busch have proven their skills on the road courses with an all-Busch front row in the Nationwide Series and Kyle on the pole for the Cup Series. Kyle finished 2nd at Pocono last week. He won at Watkins Glen in 2008 and since then has finished 4th and 8th.

Busch has three wins this season and is currently 3rd in Sprint Cup points.

Mid Range:

(odds between 10/1 – 20/1)

• Carl Edwards (15/1): Although he’s never posted a Cup win at Watkins Glen, Edwards has had some good runs here, starting from the pole last year and finishing 5th, with three top-5s and five top-10s overall in six starts.

The current points leader will start 8th on Sunday.

Long Shot:

(odds of greater than 20/1)

• AJ Allmendinger (40/1): As noted above, Allmendinger will start from P2 on Sunday with his Richard Petty Motorsports teammate starting P3. AJ’s only made three Cup starts at Watkins Glen with finishes of 11th, 13th, and 4th. [ad-8757089]

AJ comes from a karting and Champ Car background and is a two-time 2-time IKF Champion.

Summary:

A few other notable qualifying results: Jimmie Johnson starts 4th, Tony Stewart, 7th, and Jeff Gordon, 17th, and Kurt Busch, 27th. The AccuWeather forecast calls for a 40% chance of thunderstorms Sunday.

The Cup Series does not use rain tires.
