2011 Daytona 500 Betting Preview

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series first point’s race of the season just so happens to be the biggest and most prestigious one of the year. This Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. (ET) and airing on FOX is the 53rd running of the ‘Great American Race’ from Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Daytona 500 has to be considered the crown jewel of stock car racing and any driver that has already won here would agree that it remains the highlight of their racing career.

The primary attraction of this race is the fact it has consistently been one of the most challenging and difficult tests of NASCAR’s extensive 36-race, ninth month long season. Running near the front of the pack requires patience and skill as one small mistake either on the track or in pit row can end a driver’s chances for the day. There have only been nine drivers in the history of the 500 that have multiple victories and the last time somebody won it back-to-back was Sterling Martin in 1994 and 1995.

Sportsbook.com has opened Kevin Harvick as the odds-on-favorite to win this year’s race at +750. Harvick already has one Daytona 500 title on his resume with a victory in 2007 starting from the 34th position. He also had a second-place finish in 2009 after starting 32nd. He will start from the seventh spot in this year’s race. Harvick would be a solid pick in any head-to-head money line matchup for this race given his ability finish strong. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the second-favorite at +800. Junior had secured the pole position for this race by posting the fastest lap time in last Sunday’s qualifying run, but a wreck in Wednesday’s practice forces him into a backup car and a last place start on Sunday. He remains the fans’ sentimental favorite to win this year as it marks the 10th anniversary of his father’s tragic death in this very race. Earnhardt Jr. has not been competitive in the Sprint Cup series the past few seasons, but has a strong record in the 500 with a previous win in 2004 and a second-place finish in last year’s race. His all or nothing approach to this race makes him less desirable in any head-to-head wagers.

(Daytona 500 Head To Head Odds are posted here)

The Busch brothers are the next favorites at +900. Kurt Busch will take Junior’s place on the pole after winning the first race in Thursday’s Gatorade Duel which elevated him to the pole position for Sunday. He has never won a 500 but he did finish second in 2008 after starting 43rd. Busch’s consistency makes him an attractive pick in any head-to-head matchup where he is an underdog.

Kyle Busch’s best finish in six previous Daytona 500’s is a fourth –place finish in 2008 and he does have one career win and two second-place finishes at this track. He is another driver to avoid in a head-to-head matchup as his aggressive style can take him out of this race at any time.

Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon are the next wave of favorites at +1000. Stewart has been one of the most successful and popular NASCAR drivers on the Sprint Cup circuit with 247 career top 10 finishes and 39 victories. He has three wins at this track, but has yet to win the Daytona 500. His best finish in this race was second-place in 2004. Last year, he finished 22nd after starting from the sixth position.

Jeff Gordon has not won a Sprint Cup race since April of 2009, but he is a three-time Daytona 500 champion. The last time Gordon won the 500 was in 2004 and his best finish in recent memory was 10th in 2007. He will start from the outside pole position in this year’s race after posting the second fastest time in last Sunday’s qualifying run.

Stewart and Gordon would be favorable picks in head-to-head matchups when drawing some favorable odds as an underdog as both are due for a strong performance on Sunday.
