Race: Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway
Date: Sunday, April 17, 2011
Time: 1:19 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 1:00 PM EST on FOX

During an impound race weekend, the cars can not be worked on after qualifying until after the race starts. Friday’s second practice session was rained out, but the first practice was paced by Tony Stewart, while Ryan Newman posted the best consecutive 10-lap average. In qualifying Saturday, Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. snagged the first two rows, in that order. This is the second restrictor plate race of 2011.

Safe Bets:

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (12/1): Dale Jr. has five wins at Talladega in 22 starts, including four straight from 2001-2003. He finished second in this race two years ago and ran 4th in the 2011 Daytona 500. Currently 6th in Sprint Cup points, Junior starts 4th on Sunday – the same starting spot Kevin Harvick won from a year ago.

2. Carl Edwards (12/1): Edwards finished second to Trevor Bayne at Daytona to start the 2011 season and qualified mid-pack (20th) for Sunday’s race. Along with leading the Cup Series points, Edwards has finished in the top three in more than half the races so far this year. He finished 11th in this race last year.

Dark Horse:

1. David Ragan (40/1): Ragan is definitely a long-shot, but it’s worth noting that he has the third-best average finish at Talladega including two top-5s and three top-10s. He finished 6th in this race last year and has two straight top-10s heading into Talladega. Ragan has scored more points at Talladega (both spring and fall dates), including bonus points, than any other driver in the Cup Series. He qualified 7th for Sunday’s race.

Summary: Jeff Gordon, who won the pole this weekend, is now 3rd on the all-time career poles list with 70. He’s also the winningest active driver at Talladega with six wins, the most recent in 2007, which he won — from the pole.
