2010 Toyota/SaveMart 350 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: For a change of pace this weekend (literally), NASCAR will be making one of two annual visits to a road course race track, where drivers have to contend with both right and left hand turns, hills, constant shifting, and other conditions not typically associated with stock car racing.

Race: Toyota/SaveMart 350 – Infineon Raceway
Date: Sunday, June 20, 2010
Time: 3:19 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 3:00 PM EST on TNT

The Cup Series has visited Infineon Raceway in Sonoma once a year since 1989 for a total of 21 races. The past five races here have produced five different winners – two each from Chevrolet and Dodge and one from Toyota.

The last Ford driver to win here was Ricky Rudd in 2002.

Safe Bets:

Jeff Gordon (9/2): Gordon’s five wins at Sonoma are twice as many as any other driver and he won three straight from 1998-2000. He has six top-10 finishes here in his last seven starts and qualified 5th for Sunday’s race, after which he noted, “When I heard the time, I was extremely happy.”

. 2. Tony Stewart (5/1): I debated whether to put Stewart or Juan Pablo Montoya in this spot, both currently at 5/1 odds. But Stewart has a bit of momentum on his side, coming off top-5 finishes at Pocono and Michigan, and finished 2nd to Kasey Kahne in this race last year.

Overall, Stewart has two Infineon wins (the only driver besides Jeff Gordon with more than one) and the third-best average finish at 9.3 (tied with Gordon).

“I always like to go road course racing and it’s a weekend when I put a lot of pressure on myself to do well,” said Stewart.

Dark Horse:

1. Mark Martin (22/1): Mark was 17th in first practice on Friday, but climbed to 11th on the speed chart for qualifying. He won here from the pole in 1997 and has the fifth-best average finish among active drivers.

Though he’s struggled a bit lately at Sonoma, Mark posted 13 top-10 finishes here in 15 races between 1990-2004, so he clearly knows how to get around the track the right way.

Summary: The conventional wisdom at road courses is that track position is key and drivers like to start and run up front.

But it’s worth noting that only one of the last four Infineon races has been won from a top-10 starting spot, and two were won from deep in field – Juan Pablo Montoya from 32nd in 2007 and Kyle Busch from 30th in 2008.

With as many problems as can occur on the track during the course of the race, pit strategy and fuel mileage are just as critical.
